  Not a first.
  The gold Sacagaweas that went up in space were struck at West Point but had no mintmark.

  And also, lots of bullion and regular issue coins have been struck there with no mint mark when slack needed to be taken up for production.

  Kinda invalidates the whole mint mark purpose. Coins oughta be marked where they are actually minted. JMHO.

  If there was a way to determine where the coin was minted, ie a die marker, could these then be considered error coins without mint mark?
  I know one segment of the population that would love an error coin slabbed "No W".

  The West Point Mint has been minting coins without a mint mark since the 1970's. Nothing new here.
