Why can't I get this Lincoln in a PCGS holder?

bolivarshagnastybolivarshagnasty Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've made two attempts at getting this 09 vdb DDO in a PCGS holder. First time came back "questionable color". Second stated "obverse scratch". I've invested over 100 dollars in getting this coin holdered! Color should be Red/Brown, as it is toning off of full red. Is this scuff above the date on the obverse a deal breaker? Your thoughts would be appreciated. Throw in a grade if you care to. Shag

I would stop trying now. That staple scratch is rather prominent, I've had many coins bag at PCGS for scratches smaller than that.

  • Maybe this would be a good candidate to use for PCGS's "GENUINE" service? But would they still designate it as a DDO?

It's still nice, not sure if they will slab it.

Here's another FS012 in an ANACS 63-RB slab.

Well, if you REALLY want to know why PCGS won't do it, I believe you can pay to get comments now, true?
If so, use that "service" and submit. You get more than "questionable color", I believe.

Forget PCGS, you have donated enough money. I would just send it to anacs if it needs to lie in a tomb.

That scratch has damaged the coin.

    PCGS dosent slab damaged coins.

Problem coin. Off to ANACS if you want plastic wrapped around it. Unfortunate about the scratch.

They will now, if you pay them $100. That people will pay that kind of money to slab coins barely worth that much is a testament to their marketing and the power they exert over the hobby and the business.

I dont think anything in the coin collecting hobby has made more enemies than those damn little staples on the 2X2's

And to believe this "reeded rim variety" made it in a holderimage

Edited to add: This coin was not a submission of mine, never would attempt to slab one with such rim damage, tough enough getting past a BB with no apparent problems.

Mike, My thoughts exactly. If I put this Lincoln out in the weather for a year, and submit it with a brown finish on the coin, I have no doubt it would grade MSBN. So why not knock it down a grade and holder it? I have seen holdered coins that have multiple bag marks that are aesthetically worse than the 09 shown. Shag

I think its far more important to get RD with that coin. Its an 09 DDO Type 1 and they are extremely rare and extremely low population in high grade red. This is nothing to mess with, this is serious coin. Id resubmit it and try to get 'da word from da hosses mouth' as to the grade or lack of its given. Good luck

f I put this Lincoln out in the weather for a year, and submit it with a brown finish on the coin, LOL - I got three of them on the back porch - all three BB, but not for long LOL

Ziggy, I think it is the power they exert over the neophytes or kool aid drinkers.. real numismatists are not slave to slabs. Cheers, RickO

Go take a look at the price guide on the 1909 DDO MS66RD

Im not saying this coin is a 66 but who knows

The guide has the coin at Fourteen Thousand Dollars.

Are you collecting it or selling it?

I'd guess if it got slabbed with that scratch (probably not in a PCGS slab) it probably would grade about 62 RB which might sell for about $200+ nowdays.

Still a nice variety coin from an interesting date and they are going up in price fast these days. image

These are slowly catching up to the 09-s prices.

  • I think you should send it back in for one more try.

From the pics, even with the scratch it looks like a 64 Rd-RB. Ive seen worse in that same grade in PCGS slabs.

Ive seen 65Rds with staple scratches across the bust, right down the middle slabbed.

copperfan, The actual scratch I don't believe is from a staple. In hand, under a loupe, it appears to be more of a scuff. Wider than the
exposed staple end. I concur with your 64RB designation. It actually was in an ANACS MS64RD holder when I broke it out and sent it to
PCGS. Bottom line is, its more valuable in their holder given the registry set wars and all. Shag

It's not you that can't get it in there.... it's the coin. Try another house.

And then they could grade it MS65ish! image
