Nice comparison pics, but I must say that the artistic level of the original blows away the newer effort.

Edited to say: Especially the reverse.

You're right on the artistic quality of the earlier coin...especially on the reverse. Also, Im not quite sure Satin Finish was the right way to go on these. I think Id prefer an uncirculated version finished as a business strike, with glossy surfaces. I might get a proof also.

First thing I done when I removed the coin from its very impressive packaging.....was to count the legs image
  • One of those is the reeded edge variety!

wonder who will get the first 3 legger?

The boxes are really quite nice, and the coins are lovely!!

Thanks Ambro for the comparison photos!!!!

There is some serious money tied up in making all that packaging.

Too bad there isnt an option on the order ""Just send the coin"" (probably save thirty bucks at least.)

Now the Race will be to see who can quick get it up on ebay and sell it for a whole lot less then we just paid for it. (WHAAAA that dosent make any sense>>&gtimage
(But thats exactly what all these negatorians on the board think will happen)image

They really should have an option for $5 less to order just the coin.....

This way all the people that get the thing slabbed don't have to waste the packaging.....

I think your comment might change if you saw it compared tot he proof. image

The surface of the Business strike is not nearly as reflective and does not show detail well.

Authorized coin dealers have the option to order these without packaging for a discount. Unfortunately you have to do a minimum purchase of 50K per year and have an established business record of 5 years. Very tough to get this status. You even have to present your IRS tax forms to prove this.

The sculpture on the reverse fields of the 1913 T1 on my original posts are MUCH more detailed than the fields on a 37 PRCAM Ive got......the later coin has all that "art' on the reverse fields polished down smooth. That coin would probably compare with the proof buffalo very well..

Maybe Ill wait until what these negatorians say comes true....and I can get one on ebay for 1/2 of what the mint sells them for (but Il think Ill be waiting for a LOOOONG time) image

As someone who has recently been on a rant about how the Mint has gone overboard with product offerings lately... I have to say that I really love that $10 gold buffalo.

Granted, it's a recycled design, and as the pictures demonstrate, is not executed as nicely as the original.

But it's still a nice looking coin.

The artistic/engraving work on this coin reinforces my feeling that the Mint should dust off VD Brenners original Galvano for the "special" 2009 collectors cent. There is no one alive that can do the quality work that these artisans of the early 20th century were capable of. How have we lost something we one had? Of course, no one is making Hindenburgs or Graf Zeppelins anymore either image
  • The mint could have done better...
  • I think, i still like the 1 ouncer the best! But they all are very nice image
