Is it a bad thing that I cannot get interested in "type" coins?????

I am not sure why, but if there is a design that has another denomination (ie...a Seated Dime,Qtr,Half,....Barber Dime, Qtr,Half....etc...Classic Head, Draped Bust, Capped Bust...) I just can't really get excited about it. I have wanted to branch out into more areas since I have put the Buffalo nickel collecting to rest for the moment and am really only looking at Morgans and Walkers. Anyone else feel this way??? And....if there anything I can do to get more intrigued about these other areas? I have an open mind, I am just not feeling the "WOW"! Thanks for any response as always! Ya'll are the best!!!! image

If everyone collected the same way, we'd all be chasing the same stuff and driving prices way too high. It's for the better that we all like different stuff.

No problems. The collecting focus is very different.

The great thing about coins is you can collect what you like image

In my experience the longer someone has been collecting the more likely they are attracted to type collecting. Nothing wrong with not having that interest and focusing on what you presently enjoy collecting.

If you like collecting by series better than by type, of course there's nothing wrong with that.

For me personally, too many of the same design with different dates doesn't keep me interested, unless I've gone for toning differences (in the case of Washingtons and Franklins) or die varieties (in the case of draped bust quarters and halves) but the most satisfaction for me has been building a relatively complete US type set.

If I read the OP's post correctly this is the reason he's not into type collecting. In the case of the 7070 when I showed mine to someone not into coins their response was; thay all look the same just different sizes, why so many?. And thats true to some extent, all the seated type, dimes, half dimes, qtrs, halfs, and dollars all have the same basic design. Same can be said for the early coppers. I am/have enjoyed doing a 7070 but I can see the thought process at work here.

Most of the history of US coinage has been like this. It seems that only with the recent series have the designs been rather different between denominations.

One suggestion is to simply narrow your focus. Choose one seated denomination. Choose one barber denomination. Choose one Bust...etc and so forth. Different designs and denominations. You'll end up with just a few coins.

Since that set does not consist of many coins, you have quite a bit of flexibility, wait for examples that really look good to your eye. Do more waiting than buying. Start looking now. Consider buying months from now after you have seen a good sampling of what is available in these new-to-you series.

It's a VERY bad thing not to want to collect Type stuff. Shame on you.

Those Morgans have been talking you out of it again haven't they?

That's the BEST thing about coin collecting, you buy what you like to buy. Other people's opinions are just that....opinions. Don't matter a hill 'o beans. I think most people like Type 'cause it's old and expensive (most of it anyhoo).

That's probably it! If there was just one Barber, Seated, Capped, Draper etc... denomination, I would probably feel differently. Maybe it is sensory overload that leads to shut down of interest in the pursuit! Thanks!

Your collection, your preferences.. do what you want.... there is no good or bad... just the commentary of others trying to drive conformance, which, in their minds, justifies their 'obsessions' and allows them to wax authoritatively. Cheers, RickO

  • Besides Walkers and Morgans, that still leaves you with trimes, 3c Nickel, Shield Nickels, Liberty Nickels, and the cents to choose from.

Collect what you like. I personally have never understood the interest in Morgans, Lincolns and Indian head cents.

Seated and Bust coins appeal to collectors who want to obtain the rarest of the rare circulating coinage. If an 1870-CC quarter is no more exciting to you than an 1876-CC, then you're a Type collector and shouldn't start building date sets. If it's exciting to acquire an issue where there are only say, 50 examples known in all grades, then you just might be the kind of person who could assemble a complete set of Seated coins (pick your denomination, they're all good). Barber collectors tend to go for condition rarities. The person who looks for that BU 1902-S Barber dime for 5 years, and then finally finds an accurately graded piece with eye appeal, appreciates a true condition rarity. These collectors differ from the folks who want to fill a "box of 20" with attractively toned type coins, and couldn't care less about what date of mint mark they are. Many people fall somewhere in between these extremes.

Do you have any of the designs you are not interested in? I am wondering if maybe you are subconciously blocking yourself from liking a new set, or, if you're like me, paying for a new set. Of cource if you have some and still can't be interested then I would say don't worry about them for now!

I am only collecting one series right now. No problem with that.
  • I've never had any interest in type.
