New Girl On The Block - Buffalo Nickel Question

image

I have been reading posts on this forum for over a year and i feel that i have received a wealth of information which i never would have received reading books. I bought a camera but i am not sure if i can ever achieve the quality that most members achieve. I purchased five Buffalo Nickels a long time ago and sent four of them in to be graded. Two came back from NGC as MS64 and MS65. Two came back from PCGS as MS64 and MS65. Is this Buffalo worth sending in for grading? The line you see across the Indian feather is from a light source. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you
Carolyn

No, I'd just stick it in an album or something.
  • Great picture and nice Buffalo!

Take a close look at the mint mark. Might be a rpm.
I think it would probably grade 64.

It's a $50 coin in 65. If you think it's a 65, then perhaps it's worth sending along with some other stuff (yours or someone else's submission upon which you piggyback) for grading so that you aren't out a lot of money for postage. Fortunately, you have a few slabbed coins for comparison.

Also check the mintmark to see if it's a D/S variety.

    Welcome aboard!

If were almost anything but a '38-D I might say yes. But in reality, a '38-D was both very well made and very heavily saved as the last year of issue. So really, a '38-D Buff has to come back 65 if not 66 to really be worth it. This date is by far the most common Buff in 66 and above.

How does this one compare in quality to the ones that graded 64 and 65? If it's no better, I wouldn't bother submitting it.
  • I would say no unless it's a OMM#1 (overmint mark) . Looks like a 65 to me and relatively inexpensive coin at that grade without the designation. You have to much money tied up into grading fees to ever make any money on the coin. The 38-D also has the highest percentage coins graded in the series. Most of these coins where saved since it was the last year of issue for the series. The year also makes for a good type coin. Looks like a nice coin and welcome to the forums.

Can't answer your question. Has to be your decision. Financially, I guess don't get it graded.

But more importantly WELCOME to this forum!

Check the mint mark with a 10 power loupe to see if it's a D/D or D/S variety...

As far as sending in for certification, if your gonna see you get more in plastic IMHO. image

  • Welcome to the forums! Sounds like you did extremely well with your five purchases. The one in the pic looks like it could be a D/D.

    Welcome to the forum.
There are some really smart coin people here that are always willing to help share their knowledge, so take advantage of it. I know I do.

Listen to the advice from ziggy, intocoins and messydesk on this one. These coins are saved in great numbers in high grade and have to grade really high to warrant the cost of the slab. The D/D does not add much to the premium. It it were the OMM, the D/S that might be different.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
