<< <i>Are those toned milkspots???
i was wondering about that also, could it be???
One thing I don't like about these ASE's toning is they are usually a brownish color before anything really
nice(color wise) happens. But I think that this one is in the very nice category!!

I had quite a few like this one and I had NO milk spots its just where the toning did not occur.
I still have quite a few like this one and some that are streaky looking as well. No spots.
I have a few with no toning but they have milk spots

Not my coin but since I have laid about a dozen out to open air over the last year or so, I will toss out an answer......
Dust spots...spotting due to something just being there....inconsistent toning due to air toning.
I've gotten them on mine before. Very few just blanket the SAE without any spot/break in toning.
I've also seen one tone where I think it would have been a milk spot. I've never gotten milk spots up here, but I have only been buying these since 2002.
The one in question, for me, is a pre-1990 SAE so I don't know the environment it was in before.
Most all of the ones I have toned, unless I flip them over, have only been single sided (top) toners....interesting to see a double-sided toner.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Notice the same type of little spots in the toning......(no air freshener here

i had it leaning against the wall on the shelf so both sides of the coin were exposed to the air.
If you want to see more interesting toning, do the same thing but with earlier years.....the toning is slightly different, at least for me, on the earlier years....I think the finish is slightly different and that affects it.
I have a 1990 that is smooth and really cool (kind of blue/purple) that was next to the 2005

one more question on this kind of toning.... would one of these ever get slabbed at pcgs???
<< <i>bochiman, this is the only one i experimented with.

Yes.....it is a "crap" shoot, but air toning, imho, is NT....I sent in 2 I had, as an experiment, just to see. This was about 16-18 months ago.
Both slabbed... MS68...at PCGS.

I'd guess those are incipient or soon to be milk spots. I don't think an ASE will tone over the area that will eventually be a milk spot as the stuff that will eventuate as a milk spot protects the surface so to speak and keeps that area from reacting with a color forming species.

The above is true, from what I have noticed.....toning will not occur over what would eventually be a milk spot....however, I am not so sure that what is in the pics are milk spots...the "toned over/around milk spots" has a different look, from what I have seen.
