If you had a choice between XF and AU......

Say you had choice between two 1836 reeded edge halfs, one an NGC EF- 40 (Original skin) and the other an ANACs AU-58 cleaned (lightly) for the same price, which would you choose? I know what I would take but I would like to get a couple of opinions.

the no problem (NGC) coin if in hand i could tell it was all original

if the NGC upon inspection seems to be one of those market graded, lightly cleaned coins that got lucky and slabbed, well then my answer would obviously change

  • I would like to think I have some experience with this coin. The 40 and I am answering under the assumption that the 40 is original skin, since you didn't indicate differently in your hypothetical. Respectfully, John Curlis

Given the choices and information provided, I would choose the NGC 40.

    Originality is where it's at.

not seeing the coins in general I like an XF over an AU any day. If a coin has been cirulated I prefer it to have some character. Everytime I see an AU coin I have to wonder about how it lost its MS status.

    The original for me
  • Neither. I'd choose this one image

  • Seems to be unanimous I would go with the original skin too. It looks good too by the way.

eye appeal comes into play too

while i preffer a graded no problem (for resale concerns)...some graded no problem pieces are ugly...that said

    any chance on pix???

I couldn't say *for sure* until I saw the coins and I knew the particular market for that coin.

My personal bias would be toward the nice, original coin, but before I committed to that, I'd need to see them and know which specific two coins we were talking about.

    NGC all the way.

I'd go with the NGC EF-40 and never think twice about it.

Given those choices I'd take the XF40 original coin every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Is it for my collector or for flipping?
I would want to see both but, if I could tell the AU had been dipped, and the XF definitely looked original, I would likely go that route for the collection.

For flipping....depends on what I think I could get for each one image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Sorry but I don't have any pics its through a dealer. It would be for my collection, not flipping B-Man.

Then, trusting your eyes on them....I would say the most original looking

i've heard of many problem anacs that get cracked out and land in ngc or pcgs

i've heard and seen many coins in ngc and pcgs that shouldn't be in holders too

it's still all about eye appeal or buy the coin not the holder is bs

an au58 like many claim here compare or equal many ms62's but an xf40 is nowhere near that calibur of coin

    lightly cleaned as in???

even on here we see bagged coins for cleaning that stump the best of them

no blanket answer here other then i'd have to see them before i'd move

no disrespect i hope is taken herein just been doing some pcgs cu forum learning is all

  • I would respectfully disagree- a 40 ORIGINAL SKIN 36RE is just that- ORIGINAL SKIN, and a sight to behold. There is no mistaking the look. Respectfully, John Curlis

"There is no mistaking the look"

    it happens

    there are coin doctors

ngc and pcgs do pay out for their mistaking the look as this is nothing new

coin purchases as the tpg companies hoped for is neat in concept (sight unseen trading)

but without in hand veiwing or images who here clearly states buying blind is a way to go?

IMO, anyone who votes 'cleaned AU' is truly a lost soul, and would be better off collecting Beanie Babies.

No vote from me until I see the actual coins. A good percentage of NGC 40s Busties aren't original, or at least questionable. A small percentage of ANACS coins flagged as lightly cleaned are comparable to those in no-problem NGC holders, and might cross into no-problem NGC holders.

Does the ANACS holder note the cleaning or is that your opinion of the coin. If she's got 58 calibur luster and only a light dip with no wiping hairlines, I probably would lean toward the AU. But, without more info and preferably pics, too tough to make the call. If they are both offered for EF money, the AU probably has hairlines and then I would lean toward a crusty original 40.
