What's up with this Kennedy Half Dollar?

Found this 1984-P Kennedy half while doing my weekly roll search.

What caused this? No detail at all on Kennedy's head...no hair...no ear....and it is not from wear

The reverse eagle has no detail. Both areas of no details are the high points of the relief...so...is this a filled die....or an improperly set gap on the die that didn't strike up the coin fully?

This is not a casino half....reed edge is strong and sharp....other details in the perimeter are sharp....

So....what is the proper term for this?

THanks! (Sorry for the crappy photos....just can't seem to photograph silver or clad coins)

  • I'd be inclined to say struck through grease.

Does that increase the value of any coin when it's struck thru grease?
    Thanks

    The Dime is cool looking...

My Kennedy is odd looking without the ear....hated to just throw it back in the bag heading back to the bank...

Thanks to all that have replied! image

again...neat finds....but I would miss them easily due to my poor eye sight....one of the reasons I stick with half dollars and bigger coins! image

Will add this 1984 struck with grease filled die to another minor error I am offering on the BST board...perhaps smoeone else will like it.

    Thanks everyone!

I wouldn't mind having that, 1984 was when I was born.
