Found this in my 08 Proof Set. DDO or Machine?

It has been my experience that everytime I thought I had found a real, honest -to -goodness doubled die coin....it has turned out to be a machine doubled strike. Well, here I go again. Any opinions are welcome, especially the opinions of those with more knowledge than I...a fairly large group of these are avalable I am sorry to say. The coin, a 2008 S New Mexico Quarter Dollar, I received in a 2008 US Proof Set on Friday, 7/18/08. The reverse of the coin is normal. The pictures were taken with a 10 megapixal HP camera looking through one lens of a 15x stereo microscope without a tripod. I must say to those of you who post some of the glorious images you have taken of your coins....well done. It took me the better part of 3 hours between the microscope, computer, photobucket, etc. to accomplish what I have posted here and I am not happy with my image results. Lighting, lighting, lighting...Anyway,all opinions are most graciously welcomed, HM.

Think of the letter as a piece of cake sitting on a plate. Now slice the letter in half horizontally, pick the top half of the cake letter up and move it over about ½ inch. You now have the top half of that cake letter sitting just a bit off center from the bottom half.

The bottom half is now visible as a small portion of the slice and appears like a shelf, the top half is completely intact, distinct, with rounded edges and all, sitting there, just a tad bit off center.

Now, do exactly the same thing to all the other cakes sitting on the table and you have what is considered machine doubling.

Shelf doubling... and WoodenJefferson... that is one of the best explanations I have heard for the phenomenon. Cheers, RickO
