Irritating Ebay Trend

OKbustchaserOKbustchaser Posts: 5,549 ✭✭✭✭✭
I seldom complain about Ebay auctions but this is really ridiculous--and becoming a trend. 30 pages of crap in the description to read and not a word about the item the bidder is actually bidding on. I hate to pick on a single seller but COME ON!!!

Egregious example

Better Idea:

How about using the decription section to actually describe the item!!!!

Edit to add: I have had zero transactions with this seller. He may in fact be a great dealer to buy from. But how could anyone know?
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

It's always puzzled me that only on ebay do business owners go out of their way to complain about how tough their lives are.

Go into a B&M store and you won't ever hear the owner say "Look, I'm really busy here - I don't have time to answer your questions. Either buy something or don't."

On ebay, though, you see sellers like the one in the OP who go on and on about how busy they are, they don't have time to do everything right, they may not answer your questions, etc. etc.

This is the same seller who made a mistake and listed an 1883 V nickel with CENTS at a BIN appropriate for the "no CENTS" variety a few months back (as mentioned in a thread on this forum). I hit the BIN and informed them of the mistake, we entered mutual agreement not to complete the transaction and they sent me an SAE as thanks.

Somehow I suspect that these sellers that may not have time to respond or provide descriptions are the same people that demand attentive service above and beyond what is resonable when it comes to their own treatment as a customer.
  • jdillanejdillane Posts: 2,365 ✭✭✭
That is frustrating. Yet, I wonder how many sellers have decided that less is more when it comes to descriptions so as not to run afoul of an ebay description restriction.

These 4000 word policies are nothing more than a reaction to a problem bidder or two, and are a completely unnecessary waste of space.

That's really not too bad a presentation, and it's basically info on shipping charges, etc. I agree with you on the first auction though. It's mostly fine print CYA's.

Maybe so, but you had better read every word before bidding. Otherwise, you're stuck.

He's not obligated to provide a description. Quoting from a small section of his fine print:

"We list and sell a tremendous amount of coins. We do not have the time to write descriptions on every coin. As a result, the majority of our items do not have descriptions. We try to provide good quality, accurate coin photos. We have far, far less than 1% of our coins returned. We regularly hear that the coin is much nicer than the photo."

Isn’t this a rather rhetorical statement:

We specialize in rare coin and precious metals investment guidance. We rarely, if ever, use actual eBay auctions to sell our coins as we have found them to be far too unpredictable which makes it far too difficult to predict a selling price for a coin.

Especially since they have 8,000+ sales on e-bay since Apr of 2002 and call themselves a PowerSeller?

I actually like their page - for me, it pushes to the edge of excessive without quite going over the cliff.

It's my observation that ebay sellers are not business people, they are simply 'wannabes'. That said, there ARE some business people on ebay who follow
    the golden rule.

It's not complicate to do due diligence on a seller. LOOK at the feedback; look at the time in business; look at the fact that you are buying from a perfect
    stranger.

Too many quick buck artists everywhere, ebay is chock full of good and bad folk.

If you get shafted, I have a couple suggestions that have served me well to avoid them in the future:

    1. Use paypal with AMEX as your source of payment. AMEX will back you up. They helped me several times in the past when I was too quick
to pull the trigger on an item.

    2. Know that anyone with fabulous feedback can instantly fall on hard times and keep your money. That is how I found out that AMEX will back me up.
One seller had great feedback on gold eagles. But, the one I bought, along with several dozen other folks never got their coin and out the money. AMEX
stood behind me and refunded the money.

    3. In this economy, a normally 'good person' can get killed financially. It's happened to me and I paid off all my debts w/o bankruptcy, over a 12 year period.

Stay alert!!!! It's only going to get worse before it get's better. Don't mean to scare off anyone, I'm just speaking from personal experience as a self employed person the past 27 years. The up and down cycles of the economy don't shield anyone from financial distress. ANYONE.

    /////////
    //////////
    /////////

    PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE....
IF YOU ARE SUPER PICKY, AND COULD POSSIBLY BE UPSET WITH A SMALL ERROR....
PLEASE DON'T BID ON MY AUCTIONS!! PLEASE!

EBAY NOW COUNTS NEUTRAL FEEDBACK AS A NEGATIVE.
IN DOING SO, EBAY RAISES SELLERS FEES IF WE RECEIVE NEGATIVE AND NEUTRAL FEEDBACK.

THE NEW FEE SCHEDULE WORKS AGAINST SELLERS IF THEY RECEIVE EVEN NEUTRAL FEEDBACK.

I'VE ALSO FOUND AN ONLINE SOURCE THAT SHOWS SELLERS HOW MANY NEGATIVES AND NEUTRALS A PARTICULAR BUYER IS LEAVING FOR A SELLER....

SO IF YOU ARE LEAVING TONS OF NEGATIVES FOR PEOPLE, I'LL BE DELETING YOUR BID.

SELLERS ARE BANDING TOGETHER TO CUT OUT PEOPLE THAT ARE USING NEGATIVE FEEDBACK AS A WAY TO DAMAGE A GOOD SELLERS REPUTATIONS.
SO WE HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER TO STOP UNFAIR, NEGATIVES IN ADVANCE.

WE'RE NOTIFYING EACH OTHER TO ADD THESE PEOPLE TO THEIR BLOCKED BIDDER LISTS.

SO I'M GETTING TOUGH ABOUT NEGATIVE FEEDBACK. IF SOMEONE LEAVES ANY UNJUST NEGATIVES, WE'LL HAVE A FIGHT ON OUR HANDS!

I'M BLESSED TO HAVE MANY, MANY EBAY SELLING FRIENDS. WE PLAN TO BAND TOGETHER TO DEAL WITH ANY UNFAIR FEEDBACK LEFT.

IF IT'S BEING LEFT TO BE SPITEFUL, EVERY SELLER I KNOW WILL BE EMAILED AND WARNED ABOUT THAT BUYER.

I'M THE MOST HONEST SELLER YOU'LL EVER MEET.

I TRY TO REFUND EVEN SMALL AMOUNTS IN SHIPPING IF I'VE OVERCHARGED IN ERROR. I HONESTLY ANSWER PEOPLE'S QUESTIONS ON ITEMS, EVEN IF I WORKS AGAINST A SALE.

SAY, "WOULD THIS LOOK GOOD ON A BUSTY GIRL"??? I AM HONEST. I WON'T TELL YOU YES JUST TO MAKE A SALE!

    HONESTY IS MY POLICY!!!!!

BUT I EXPECT FAIR AND HONEST TREATMENT IN RETURN.

PLEASE, PLEASE SEE MY OVERALL FEEDBACK!
I HAVE OVER 17,000 OVERALL POSITIVES, AND IN 11 YEARS ONLY HAD 27 NEGATIVES...
    PROBABLY 1/2 FROM CRAZIES!! LOL

ONE EXAMPLE WAS THE ITEM WAS WRINKLED! ONE ACCUSED ME OF NOT SHIPPPING, EVEN THOUGH SHE NEVER PAID ME AND WE SOON BOOTED OFF OF EBAY! LOL I'VE HAD CRAZIES LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IN MY 11+ YEARS OF SELLING.
I JUST RECEIVED A NEUTRAL BECAUSE A SIZE TAG SAID "2", BUT THE BLOUSE FIT A 1X PERSON ONLY....
SO OF COURSE I HAVE TO LIST IT AS A 1X.
NO SIZE 2X PERSON COULD HAVE EVER FIT INTO IT!!!!

There are times tags can be lost or sticky tags come free in error.
I try very, very, very hard to keep everything right and perfect for you. But things happen!!!
If things like this would bother you.... PLEASE, DON'T BID.

I also take only ONE group of pictures for a particular item. Though I may be selling more than one or in a range of sizes.
So items might vary a tiny bit in pattern placement etc.
I truly spend HOURS working on pictures. I just don't have time to take pictures of each and every item when I'm selling the same thing in a size 1X, 2X, 3X etc say.
SO IF THAT'S A PROBLEM... PLEASE DON'T BID!

BUT EBAY NOW CHOOSES TO ONLY ADD UP THE CRUMMY MOSTLY UNFAIR NEUTRALS AND NEGATIVES. HENCE, MY LOWER NUMBER...
PERSONALLY, I DON'T GET THE CALCULATION! LOL

I'M ABOUT READY TO PACK UP AND MOVE ON FROM SELLING ALL TOGETHER.
NOT ONLY ARE WE HAVING A HARDER TIME SELLING....
WE'RE BEING KICKED IN THE BUM IF ONE BUYER DECIDES THEY ARE IN A BAD MOOD AND WANTS TO DING US!

IF FOR SOME REASON ANYONE THINKS WE MAKE BIG BUCKS SELLING... LET ME TRY TO CLEAR THAT UP.

In most listings, if an item is won at the listing price, I make $2.00.
TWO DOLLARS FOR AN HOURS WORK THAT GOES INTO A LISTING.
I LIVE on ebay. I work 7 days a week taking pictures, cropping, scanning. Setting up the templates and auction listings.
Steaming the items. And having my 85 year old Mum iron things.
I bet nobody out there makes $2.00 hour for their job.
Now granted, there are items that sell for more.
But once again, these items only balance out those TWO DOLLAR sales.
Sellers pay ebay HUGE FEES. Both for the listings and the ending fee based on the selling price of the auctions.
    Then Paypal of course also.
And any auction listers we use to make the templates look nice.
Plus the gas, time, tape, ink, paper, tissue and everything else we buy to cover the cost of selling.

    I HAVE NO OTHER INCOME.

ALL I WANT TO DO IS BE HONEST AND SELL YOU A NICE, FASHIONABLE ITEM AT THE DIRT CHEAPEST COST I CAN.

BUT DO NOT BID IF YOU CAN'T CONFORM TO THESE RULES.

    THEY ARE SIMPLE.

I'M NOW CHANGING THE TIME ALLOWED FOR PAYMENT.

PAYMENT WILL BE DUE 7 DAYS FROM THE AUCTION ENDING.
I'M SORRY. BUT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE FLAKING OR TELLING ME IT'S BEEN MAILED ETC.
I CAN'T GO ANY LONGER A TIME FRAME ANY LONGER. I'M SORRY!

I WILL THOUGH ACCEPT A LONGER PAYMENT TIME FRAME IF YOU ARE A LONG TIME, REPEAT BUYER... AND YOU EMAIL ME TO CONFIRM THIS BEFORE BIDDING.

THIS IS GOING TO HAVE TO INCLUDE PENDING ECHECKS....
THEY ADD ANOTHER 4-5 DAYS ONTO THE PAYMENT TIME.
I DON'T RECEIVE THE FUNDS UNTIL THEY CLEAR.
SO IF USING A PENDING ECHECK, IT MUST CLEAR WITHIN THAT 7 DAY PERIOD. IT'S ONLY FAIR!

I AM NO LONGER ACCEPTING PERSONAL CHECKS. SORRY! I'VE BEEN BURNED SO MANY TIMES RECENTLY. JUST CAN'T DO IT! THE ROTTEN APPLES ARE RUINING IT FOR ALL YOU GOOD BUYERS.

IF YOU ARE ONE OF MY LONG TIME BUYERS, PLEASE EMAIL ME AND WE'LL DISCUSS ACCEPTING ONE FROM YOU. BUT YOU MUST EMAIL ME BEFORE BIDDING, PLEASE.

PAYMENT IS DUE WITHIN 3 DAYS ON EBAY STORES AND BUY IT NOW ITEMS.
(UNLESS OTHER ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE BETWEEN US)

I ALSO CHARGE THE SMALLEST HANDLING FEE OF ANY OTHER SELLER I'VE FOUND.
(THAT IS WITHOUT INFLATING THE SHIPPING OR SELLING PRICE SO DARN HIGH IT'S SILLY! LOL)

I'M AFRAID I WILL NO LONGER BE ACCEPTING BIDS FROM PEOPLE WITH ZERO (0) FEEDBACK.
I WILL BE DELETING ANY BIDS BY PEOPLE WITH ZERO FEEDBACK. SORRY! YOU GUYS HAVE DONE ME IN.

IF YOU CAN PAY FOR AN ITEM WITHIN 2 DAYS OF THE AUCTION ENDING, THEN I WILL CONSIDER ALLOWING THE BID.

IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM, WE CAN DISCUSS IT.

BUT IF NEGATIVES OR NEUTRALS ARE LEFT FOR NO REASON, I'LL DO ANYTHING POSSIBLE TO WARN ALL OTHER SELLERS ABOUT UNFAIR PRACTICES.

OH! AND YES. SOMETIMES THE ITEMS I PURCHASE HAVE THE LABEL PARTIALLY REMOVED OR BLACKED OUT.
ENOUGH IS USUALLY THERE OR SEEN SO YOU CAN EASILY MAKE OUT THE MAKER OF THE ITEM.

I ALSO SELL ACCORDING TO SIZE!!!!!
IF AN ITEM IS A HUGE, HUGE, HUGE 1X, BUT WOULD ONLY FIT A 3X.... I HAVE TO LIST IT AS A 3X!!
    IT'S SILLY TO DO OTHERWISE!
NO 1X PERSON COULD WEAR THE ITEM!
SO IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS ALSO....
    DO NOT BID!!!

IF THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR YOU, PLEASE ASK FIRST OR LET ME KNOW BEFORE BIDDING.
    OR DON'T BID!!!!!

THEY ARE ALL QUALITY ITEMS. NOT DEFECTS OR SECONDS.
I SELL AT LOT OF CLOSE OUTS. PAST SEASON ITEMS.
THAT IS WHY THE TAGS ARE SOMETIMES BLACKED OR PARTIALLY REMOVED.

I DON'T BUY FROM HUGE COMPANIES JUST GETTING RID OF THINGS. I PERSONALLY BUY EACH ITEM MYSELF. SO I CHECK THINGS OVER FIRST.
    IF THAT'S A PROBLEM THOUGH DON'T BID!
I'D RATHER LOSE A SALE THAN HAVE ANOTHER NASTY EBAYER COMPLAIN AND LEAVE SNEAKY FEEDBACK.
JUST ASK OR DON'T BID. PLEASE!!!!!!!.

I DO NOT DO RETURNS, UNLESS THERE IS A FLAW IN THE ITEM THAT HAS BEEN MISSED.

EBAY IS AN AUCTION FORMAT, NOT A RETAIL SHOP FORMAT.

I JUST CAN'T DO RETURNS BECAUSE ONCE THE ITEM HAS BEEN RECEIVED, IT DOESN'T FIT YOU THE WAY IT WAS "EXPECTED" TO LOOK ON YOU. I'M SORRY! IT'S JUST NOT POSSIBLE WITH THE SMALL AMOUNT OF MONEY I MAKE ON A SALE.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MEASURING YOUR BODY WITH THE INCHES LISTED AND DETERMINING IF THOSE MEASUREMENTS WILL FIT YOU.
EACH BODY IS DIFFERENT. SOME THINGS DO NOT LOOK AS WELL ON CERTAIN SHAPES AS OTHERS. I CAN'T BE RESPONSIBLE OR EXPECTED TO REFUND BECAUSE AN ITEM DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT ETC. I'M TRULY SORRY.

PLEASE, ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU ARE UNSURE. I AM ALWAYS AROUND AND CAN EASILY MEASURE A CERTAIN AREA IF YOU WISH. ARMS, LEG WIDTH ETC. ASK! I'M SO VERY HAPPY TO CHECK & MEASURE FOR YOU!

AND.... I AM ADAMANT ABOUT THIS!!!

YOU MUST RESPOND WITHIN 3 DAYS TO THE INVOICE SENT. PERIOD!

I'M GETTING PEOPLE THAT ARE UPSET WITH ME BECAUSE I HAVE TO FILE A NON-PAYMENT WITH EBAY BECAUSE I HAVE NOT HEARD BACK FROM THEM FOR A WEEK!!!!

DON'T GET UPSET WITH ME IF YOU ARE NOT BEING CONSIDERATE AND REPLYING WITHIN THE 3 DAYS REQUESTED. IF YOU'VE BID AND WON AN ITEM, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO RESPOND. IT'S SO EASY AND ONLY CONSIDERATE!

I CAN'T READ PEOPLE'S MINDS OR LIVES TO KNOW WHEN YOU PLAN ON PAYING ETC. I WISH I COULD! LOL
( ONCE AGAIN, DUE TO SO MANY PEOPLE FLAKING ON ME! )

I strive to give you the very best and honest deal possible, along with some fun clothing that's a little different and unusual ~

PLEASE CHECK OUT MY EBAY STORE IF YOU HAVE A FREE MINUTE. I TRULY APPRECIATE IT!

We can always hold over one week (two Sundays) ON EBAY AUCTIONS ONLY, to combine shipping and save you extra $$$$. But payment is due within 7 days of the first item win.
WE CAN THOUGH INCLUDE EBAY AUCTION ITEMS WITH EBAY STORES ITEMS TO COMBINE SHIPPING, AND SAVE YOU MONEY THAT WAY TOO!

    ANYTHING TO SAVE YOU MONEY!!

FLAT RATE BOXES ARE NOW $9.80.
LARGE FLAT RATE BOXES ARE $12.95.
I CAN GET A TON OF MERCHANDISE IN A FLAT RATE BOX.

WITH THE SUMMER SALE, IF YOU PURCHASE MORE THAN ONE ITEM, NO HANDLING FEES! JUST THE PRICE TO SHIP TO YOU.

I CHARGE JUST BY WEIGHT AND ZIP CODE, PLUS THE 50 CENTS HANDLING PER ITEM. In the flat mailers it goes by weight and zip to zip.

WITH A FLAT RATE BOX, I CAN OFTEN FIT 7 OR 8 ITEMS IN IT. SO A SUPER, SUPER SAVINGS ON SHIPPING!!! HUGE SAVINGS!!

ALL MY EBAY ITEMS COME FROM A SMOKE FREE HOME! image

I TRULY DO WANT YOU TO LOVE YOUR ITEM AS MUCH AS I DO.
SO LET'S CHAT, ASK QUESTIONS IF NEEDED. I'M MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP YOU.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR BID AND YOUR TIME.

I'M PROBABLY THE MOST GRATEFUL EBAY SELLER YOU'LL EVER MEET!

PAYMENT IS DUE WITHIN 7 DAYS OF AUCTION ENDING ON EBAY AUCTIONS. PAYMENT IS DUE WITHIN 3 DAYS OF PURCHASE ON EBAY STORES OR BUY IT NOW ITEMS. (UNLESS OTHER ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE BETWEEN US)

I accept Paypal, Money Orders .(WITHIN THE US ONLY).

I NO LONGER ACCEPT PERSONAL CHECKS!

If you are a LONG TIME buyer, we can discuss doing so. But only if you email me first and we chat about it!

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: I accept Paypal or Money Orders only. There are no exceptions to this as our banking fees are too high to accept any other form of payment.

BUT REMEMBER, PAYMENT MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 7 DAYS. SO IF MAILING AN INTERNATIONAL PAYMENT, THIS CUTS THE TIME FRAME CONSIDERABLY.

A $2.00 International fee will be added to all orders outside the U.S.

I ship USPS Priority Mail only within the United States.

But can ship USPS Overnight for U.S. purchases if needed.

I SHIP IN PRIORITY SOFT & FLAT MAILERS TO SAVE YOU MONEY. NOT ME!

ITEMS WILL BE WRINKLED IF I SHIP IN A FLAT RATE MAILER. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. BUT IT'S TO SAVE YOU MONEY.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SAVE THE MONEY, AND WANT ME TO SHIP IN A PRIORITY BOX, JUST LET ME KNOW.

I'll gladly re-weight the item(s) and give you a different shipping amount.

BUT THIS WILL INCREASE THE PRICE OF YOUR SHIPPING. A BOX ADDS APX. 8 MORE OZS TO THE SHIPPING WEIGHT. ADDING TO THE PRICE FOR SHIPPING.

I ship USPS Global Priority for International purchases.

HERE'S THE SCOOP ON INTERNATIONAL FIRST CLASS SHIPPING...

I no longer can drive over to the post office to ship First Class Airmail for International sales.
Plus, I've had to switch over to plain brown boxes for shipping First Class Airmail. Which ADDS WEIGHT TO THE TOTAL.

So it's running more than the weight given, AND MORE IN PRICE THAN EBAY CALCULATES. THERE IS NO WAY FOR ME TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN A SOFT MAILER AND THE 8 MORE OZS A BROWN BOX WILL WEIGH. (I weigh in a flat mailer for US Priority Mailings) Shipping in a box adds apx. 8 ounces to the total.

    So.....
If you don't mind waiting an apx. week for shipment. And my adding the additional weight to the total at the auction end, I can still ship First Class Airmail. But the shipment would be a bit more with the additional box weight, AND there would be an apx. 1 week wait for shipment. image

    INSURANCE IS OPTIONAL....

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY ALSO, I FEEL THE USPS POSTAL SERVICE IS VERY, VERY GOOD AND WITH THE OVER 15,000 ITEMS I'VE SOLD, I WOULD SAY LESS THAN 5-10 HAVE EVER BEEN LOST.

BUT UN-INSURED ITEMS ARE SHIPPED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I'd challenge any significant rare coin company or business in the USA to prove a <1% return rate. Most companies work on a 5-20% return rate imo. Anyone quoting 1% is lying. No one is that good nor are the customers.

I have to dissagree a little bit with you on that one Roadrunner. Of course it depends on what you sell. If you sell raw coins, then perhaps the 1% number may be shaky. My return rate is about 1 out of 300 on ebay, but I only sell coins slabbed by the major TPG's. I did sell of my US stamp collection on ebay over a five year period. That was all raw material, and my return rate was about 1%. I have always had a very liberal return policy.

Edit: I may have missed a significant point you made. I did not think about your statement about "rare coins". The few coins I have sold in the $5000 to $10,000 range have resulted in a higher return rate (2 out of 20), even though they were all NGC or PCGS coins. At that price range the buyers will be very discriminating and study closely the coin in hand. Of course that is fine with me, if they are not satisfied then I do not want to complete the sale.
