Really BIG pic of PCGS MS-70 Coin - Bald Eagle Dollar. Warning - BIG image!

claychaserclaychaser Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭✭
Just got this back from PCGS. This was the best one out of 100. Though a large picture would be interesting to see the MS-70 criteria.

Feel free to point out any flaws you can see:

What's going on with the rim edge under 'One' on the reverse????

Actually, it's most of the rim edge on the reverse....is that plastic....no, it's not slabbed at this point!!!!

What's with the dot of a mark on the 2 in 2008? There is also a mark just south of the middle point in the upright of F in OF.

Missed a small dent in the 2 on the obverse and above the E on the reverse oh and a couple small ones on the feathers of the eagle on the obverse. Oh and a little rub on the right claw and arrows on the reverse. image

But they fall into the as struck category and are outside the 5X loupe requirement. image

It's that 5x loupe requirement that's interesting. I think "70" = "perfect" as far as a 5x view is concerned. This is just a huge image.

When I submit, I use a 7X, figuring my middle age eyes are worth -1 or -2 X on the loupe!

image You guys are as critical as I am!
  • In my opinion that coin should not grade a 70 with those couple marks, especially with the small dot on the #2 in the date.

Could you enlarge the pic a little so that it fills my 42 inch LCD TV monitor? Thanks.

PS: I love the reverse design.

The spot in the 2 jumped off the page, as did the small spot above the E in STATES and the ?scratches? along the reverse rim.

[edited because there's only one E in States. image ]

p.s. the vertical shield lines, particularly along the right side of each group, do seem to have some slight contact marks. Could be the photo, however.

MS 70 is not absolute perfection, just no flaws visible with a 5X glass. This coin seems to me to be a 70, if any coin deserves that grade.
