Something you might want to add about the Unc. ""W" is the reverse changes and matches the reverse of the proof, where the regular bullion platinum coin always had the flying eagle on the reverse.
This makes the Unc "W" the MS version of the coin, just like for commemoratives.
This is different than the gold "W" unc. and bullion gold, which have the same design, only the "W" is added.
Anyone else get the feeling the Mint is putting these out just because they have to? I sense no enthusiasm, which fuels speculation this might be the last issue of this mini-series. Just placed my order for the 1/2. I, too, think mintages will be through the . . . . . . . . . . . floor.

Hmmmm.... might have a point there. Lessee, low mintage causen high gas prices this year ... around $4/ gallon. NEXT year when Gas is $6/ gallon and money is even TIGHTER. Hmmmm .... people will pay me a big premium to buy what they couldn't buy last year when gas was cheaper than the current $6/gallon.
I just don't see much upside in the 08 W uncs even w/ a low mintage
* the collector base for platinum is shrinking by the day * profit margin has shrunk because spot price has increased so much * the non-W coins could possibly have a lower mintage after the dust settles
Nobody cares about the plats (including the mint). The only thing that can save this series is an error (reverse of the Owls maybe).
It used to be that the Plat Eagles were a 2-play series. On one hand you had the numismatic angle fueled by low mintages, changing reverses, and just the coolness factor of Platinum. On the other hand you had the metals play due to the Platinum itself.
NOW, Platinum is so danged sky-high, the only thing left is the metals play. The numismatic thing is just barely alive - for the US Mint only. I'm thinking just like you on the secondary market - it's GONE baby GONE.
So buy em if you like em - but forget flippin for a quick profit.
And if the Mint stopped the series. It would be just 3 or 4 coins I don't feel I need to buy each year. But add the 2 gold buffalos I expect to collect.
Everyone thought the 1915 Pan Pacific's were too expensive and didn't buy but look at them now. Pleased to see that some of you feel the same way about the platinums.

you're comparing the platinum series coins to the 100 yr old 1915 Pan Pac?? Well you're right, in that it probably will take 100 years for these coins to command a premium over spot.
<< <i>And if the Mint stopped the series. It would be just 3 or 4 coins I don't feel I need to buy each year. But add the 2 gold buffalos I expect to collect. >>
I thought it was only a three year series - 2006, 2007 and 2008? It seems to me that those who collected the first two years will purchase the third to complete the set.

I am having a hard time justifying paying the huge premium for these considering that if platinum keep going up they will only be worth melt, so i would do better buying platinum bullion at spot.
So in an odd way, the only way these would have a big premium is if there is a low mintage AND platinum drops to the mid 1,000 levels.

On the other hand, you could look at it as you're covered either way. But you nailed the dilemma exactly. Personally, I'm willing to gamble that these are going to be highly desirable one day. If I'm wrong, I still have a beautiful set and enough hard assets to get across the border--not that there will be any borders by then!

Depends on how disappointed they are about the sudden design change on the 3 coin in the set. I dropped my 2006 & 2007's when they changed the 2008. >>
Also, and perhaps most importantly, this set is MUCH more expensive than the previous ones. This is A LOT of $$ to lay out!

The 2008 was suppose to have a owl on the reverse but when they were released they had a blindfolded liberty holding a scale of justice.
These will do fine when the ecomony recovers, it could take a decade but for us collectors we'll do fine. Really who says PM's are high? If the ecomony stabablizes and Platinum is $2500 as it's norm it will move from there. Think of what cars have done when one could be purchased for a couple thounsand dollars in the 70's to over 20 grand for a new one today. It just take time for peoples percreptions to change, offer someone gas at $2 today and they'll think that's dirt cheap (the good ole days )
Uhh, I still think the new eagle looks like a fascist Nazi one, but maybe that is appropriate???Blind justice? Not sure about that one either as I would like some wisdom (owls) thrown into the equation.
Love that Milled British (1830-1960) Well, just Love coins, period.
Now that the common man cannot submit for 1st strike designation I bet even fewer of these are purchased from the Mint. I could see VERY low sales in 2008 but they will probably keep them on sale fovever!!

I think this could be the reason they suspended the 2008 proof Platinum Eagles yesterday.
I just put something up on Mint News Blog.
Mint News Blog - US Mint News, Product Information, and Commentary.
Just can't decide if I want to buy them cheap on e-bay or pay full mint pricing.
Funds will be really tight this year as gas costs several hundred more per month now.

It's for this exact reason that the mintages might be extremely low. I am buying the $100 and $50 versions.
<< <i>I was also caught by surprise. No release date listed on schedule, no product release announcement.

But for that - probably better to buy off eBay at a fraction over melt.
Buffalo Nickel - 21.2 mm diameter
1/4 oz Gold - 22 MM diameter
wow almost the same size - I'm in
I am going with the 1/2 oz fractional gold buffalos, probably both Proof and Circ.

The 2008 was suppose to have a owl on the reverse but when they were released they had a blindfolded liberty holding a scale of justice.
And then, they changed it to this:
Eagle and Gal?
<< <i>I personally like the new reverse design alot better then 2 owls..... >>
That's because ravens can probably steal from eagles a lot more easily than they can from owls!

Interesting. That was apparently a common critism of the Library of Congress Bimetallics.
<< <i>but they will probably keep them on sale fovever!! >>
That is THE KEY question! Of course, they extended the sale period for the Jackie Robinsom Unc. and the numbers were still very low. Who knows?
