Mint Set Question

Hi, another newbie question here,

Since I've only recently started collecting, I've been buying mainly mint sets, both from the mint and online auctions. Is it better to leave the mint sets in their original packaging with the CoA or to have the set professionally graded?
I especially worry more about the older sets, before they started coming in the plastic slabs.

Also, if I devcide to have a set graded, I read that PCGS normally requires that coins be packaged in a very specific manner. Would this also apply to mint and proof sets, or can those be submitted in the original government package with the CoA?

Thanks for your help,
Ray

unless you are an expert grader,
you will lose money by sending in these sets

so keep them together and enjoy them
    for what they are

they will not be rare coins during this century

I would leave them in the original packages. I have seen threads that say these will never go up in value because of the mintage numbers.

I would say let them crack theirs open and in about 20 years the unopened will maybe bring a premium.
I placed a WTB on the BST forum wanting to trade ASE's for proof sets. They were all common years nothing with a low
mintage...I only received 1 offer....So you go fiqure everybody claims they are not worth keeping in their original package
Yet no one wants to trade silver for clad....image

That should tell you something..Turn your PM function on and I will send you a link to buy every proof and mint set you need
    at prices you can't beat...

It sounds like you're referring to proof sets.

Definitely keep the sets together which command a set
premium but there's little reason to keep those with a
    discount intact.

Not a lot to add but image
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

Unless there is a coin in your sets that really "jumps out at you", keep them intact. If you think you have something exceptional in one of your sets, post a picture here and one of the many modern experts that post here can give you an idea of whether or not it's worth submitting.

  • My PM feature is on now, sounds like a link I'd like to see, Thanks James.

As for what I've been buying, it's the Uncirculated Mint Set, the Proof Set and the Silver Proof Set, at least for the years when there is more than 1 type I find.

Well thank you all for your answers!

It's up to your individual taste:

I have almost complete runs of mint sets and proof sets and they are all in thier original mint packageing with all mint papers and many with the original shipping cartons. That is just how I prefer them to be.
