Does anyone know what this is? (Might not be suitable for some!)

I found this in my dad's stash, which the newest thing in there was BiCentennial Quarters. I have never seen anything like it before. My mom thinks it's probably pre-war, due to the back of it, as the swastika was apparently known as a good luck sign before Hitler used it.

Have any of you seen one of these before? Know more about it? It's big, by the way. When layed on top of a Morgan or Peace dollar, it's almost as large, leaving just the rim exposed.

I have never seen anything at all like it before.

I scanned it, so even though it looks crooked, it was placed on the scanner tray straight up and down. It's not as dirty as it looks-the scanner does that. I believe it's the same basic makeup as pre-82 Pennys. It's dies were crooked-the back is not a straight flip from the front.

While I don't have any intention of selling it, is it valuable? Something I should have insured, perhaps? I don't believe so but you never really know.

Thanks!

The Union Stove Works was founded in 1834 in Peekskill NY. It closed in the early 30s when the depression hit. A big exporter of stoves in the WWI era. Is pre WWII token for sure, prior to the hackenkreuz being associated with the National Socialist in Germany.

That would make sence-my family is originally from Peekskill and moved here in 1977-much of my family is still in Peekskill.

Could this be from the time right after the Civil War when many tokens were issued? I've read a bit about them but not much.

    Thanks for the info!

I forgot in the original post to ask WHEN it was from...Oops!

The swastika was used in many cultures and was a good luck sign. The Nazis appropriated it in the 30's but prior to that time, it had no negative connotations.

Kind of cool. It looks like there are a number of good luck symbols crammed in, including the horseshoe, 4-leaf clover, wishbone (?), and rabbit (?)

As others have already mentioned, it is not associated with the later swastika usage. The style of the production of the piece appears to me to be more modern than right after the Civil War and more likely contemporary with WWI. I don't know the value, but have seen somewhat similar items sell for $10 or so.

I learned something new today! Never heard this before.

The "Don't Worry Club" tokens seem to be from the 1900-1930 era. I don't collect them specifically, but I've seen them around. In looking at completed listings on eBay, it looks like swastika tokens in general sell in the $10-$15 range. There is also an example of this specific token on eBay now, with a starting bid of $1, if you want to see a more exact value when it closes in a few days.

There is entirely too much emotion attached to symbols.. the swastika has been around for centuries... while I appreciate the feelings of those oppressed and murdered under that bloody regime... it is not the fault of the symbol.. Cheers, RickO

    How true, Ricko...

As I understand it... what we refer to as a swastica, as has already been mentioned, has been used by many cultures through history...it is, in fact, quite ancient...

It was usually drawn with the "spokes" going in the opposite direction than the one used by the nazis...

...and it's meaning was "Strength in Unity" or "from the one spring many and unity of the many creates one"...

...it was used primarily to help draw the energy of peace and harmony into the community using the symbol...
