1795 Small Head Half, from ICG F12 to PCGS VG10, but now with altered surfaces?

This 1795 Small Head Half, O-126a, used to be in an ICG F12 holder, but now I see it in a PCGS VG10 holder. The only problem is, it doesn't seem to look the same as it did before. The ICG coin had obvious slide marks on the face (not adjustment marks), and more of an olive color on both sides. Now it's on a well-known dealer's website as having "attractive gray toning on both sides" Something doesn't smell right.

It looks as though the second set of images is from a scanner, which can really make a coin look different. Regardless, the imaging technique is not the same so I might give the benefit of the doubt unless the coin looked different in-hand.

Is it at all possible that the ICG slab had scratches, and not the coin?

it was 100% on the coin, not the holder (I owned it for a few months while in the ICG holder and sold it due to the distracting marks)

all i can say is that the current seller is showing the coin in thee
best possible way... and in my mind is hoping to reel in a sucker
who will not return it once in hand.

tomb as always has a good point i am agreeing with.

I think TomB has the best guess on this one. The images from the 2nd seller look pretty bad,
    probably just a terrible scan.

I wouldn't think PCGS would let that get by, but on a 1795 coin, you never know.

You know if you REALLY wanted to get rid of those marks on the surface you could just circulate it for a bit longer. image

A small change in lighting can make a HUGE change in how scratches appear.

Going from a photograph to a scan is likely what caused this, and not anything more nefarious.

Unless, of course, you've seen in your own hands the before and after coin....Mike
