Just for fun, can you think up a TV reality show centered around coin collecting?

"Reality" shows seem to be endless in number and in concept (the latest one I have seen promos on is where for one week, teenagers will be given responsibility for taking care of real babies 24/7; now that should be interesting to watch).

Any thoughts or idea's about a reality show centered around coin collecting? I have a couple of ideas.

Central to such a show should/could be one or more of the following: the possibility of making a huge profit (i.e. finding a 1969S DDO MS Lincoln is a OBW roll of 1969S Cents bought for $3.00, with the DDO selling for 5 or 6 figures); the possibility of suffering a big loss; the possibility of someone mishandling a rare coin [his or someone else's] and turning it from a high grade to a damaged piece of junk; the spouse and kids not liking dad's hobby; heirs trying to dispose of a deceased collector's collection; B&M stories; coin show stories; auctions; RIPS; cherry picks; and the cast being a cross section of people (not just a bunch of lilly white middle aged male coin nerds).

Let your imagination run wild and lets see what you forumites can come up with.

    Not too long ago in the recent past there actually was one coin company whose principal pitched an idea to start up their own media production company and to have a reality show produced featuring that company's daily operations.

    Whether anybody would have watched that show or not is something that I cannot say for sure.

    Start with six people given $5,000 each and sent into the bourse at a coin show. Armed with nothing but a magnifying glass to examine the coins, they have to use skill in evaluation and negotiating (perhaps as well as knowledge and luck) to buy as much "value" as they can in the first four hours after the bourse opens to the public. Any cash left over is forfeited, so you might as well buy coins quickly in the last few minutes if you have the money!

    You could watch snippets of each player looking through coins, trying to haggle, identifying a cherrypick or undergraded slab.

    At the end of the show, the coins are graded and appraised. The participant with the lowest value is "kicked off the island".

    Such a show would, no doubt, set new record Nielsen ratings. image

    The show's demographics would be Men 50+. The advertisers wouldn't be interested.

    How about burying a collection of coins around Costa Rica, and planting the clues to their where-abouts with the local population of 18-20 year old young ladies. The contestants will milk cows for hints to where the young ladies with the clues are currently tanning. Someone else can take it from here. image

    There would be a way around it, have bikini models at every table. Will the collector look at the coins or the model???
  • The plot of a Show of interest would be to have 7 Blonde California young Misses and 1 Brunette New York Miss each be given a $1 denomination coin with instructions that one of the coins is worth a minimum of 2000 X Face Value. The one that has the closest amount of cash to that figure at the end of the Show wins an additional $50,000.00. However, they can only accumulate any cash thru coin purchases/sales. Interesting replies thus far.

    To generate interest for the show in the general public, [admittedly the show probably would not last more than one season], you would have to include the following components:

    1. possible riches to all constestant with the winning contestant getting big bucks;

    2. tasks that the average joe or jane off the street could perform (hunting for coins on a bourse floor or bidding on coins at auction);

    3. drama and bickering (i.e. contestants formed into coin hunt teams, or family members on teams, or spouses on teams, or boyfriend and girlfriend teams);

    4. sex appeal (hunky guy contestants and hot girl contestants, going on a coin hunt at a coin show in Vegas or LA, with team members meeting at the pool or beach to plot out strategy);

    5. fierce competition (i.e. similar to the PCGS World Series of Grading, only the contestants use real money); and

    6. celebrity judges (are any of the big shots in the coin world celebrities and telegenic?).

    All... yes, every one... of the reality shows are staged fakes... I cannot understand why they are so popular. One of my employees was involved in one (Wife Swap) and it was an incredible fiasco.. I spoke to some of the crew. It was very enlightening.. they are ALL phony. Cheers, RickO

    I don't know if this counts, but a daughter of a well known coin dealer was one of the main "characters" of an ultra-popular reality program on MTV.

    Like the BBC show Bargain Hunt.

    David Dickinson hosts the show that challenges two teams to scour the country for antiques hoping they'll bring a profit at auction.

    Like suggested in an earlier thread give the two teams a certain amount of money and off to the bourse.

    Okay, here's the scene:

    Its the FUN show and 3 goups of boyscouts are on a coin hunt to complete their coin collecting merit badge.

    Included in the coin hunt are requirements to interview 3 different dealers on specific series, professional reps from TPG's, the designated show auctioneers ( calling the auctions or consignment reps) as well as promotors of the show.

    The camera alternates between the different scout teams actually finding the coins to interviewing dealers, show promotors, TPG's and auctioneers.

    I am sure we will see patience exuding from everyone.image

    Jon - Do you think they wanted a "coin person family" because we're so interesting, or because they figured coin people would sell out for less cash?

    Any thoughts or idea's about a reality show centered around coin collecting?

    Only idea that comes to mind would be something for the History Channel ...

    Exploration and recovery of sunken treasure from famous or not so famous shipwreck off the coast of some tropical locale ... include natives if necessary to help ratings.

    Instead of a reality show something similar to Antiques Road Show. Could draw out a rare coin or two, and generate public interest and awareness in coin collecting. In a rough financial times it could really stir interest, not everyone has old furniture, plates etc around their homes or apartments but almost everyone has some coins even if just moderns. Cheerios anyone?

    The show could even travel to Omaha.

  • Expanding on Ziggy's idea, three teams of twenty-somethings are given a set amount of money to scour the bourse floor during one episode, and during the next episode each team has to set up and man a table at a large show. The team with the most money at the end, wins.

    Or.. two teams start with an equal amount of money and they have to stock and run opposing B&M shops. The one who shows the most profit (or the least loss) wins.

    So who's the coin dealer who wanted to be the star of a reality show on coin dealers?

    Yes I can.

    I would be hired a the new 'backroom' guy at Blue Moon Coins.

    I could be there in 2 1/2 hours if this concept flies.
