Coins in bodies of water??

does anyone know the origins of throwing coins into water?? (as popularized by wishing wells, fountains at chinese restaurants etc)
a thread on the sportscard forum (link to thread in question) got me to thinking about this
apparently many coins were thrown on the banks and shallow waters of the erie canal (a $20 gold piece is mentioned).....was this a tradition of some sort?

No, this isn't a poke at the whigs.
1952 after coins were found by kids of the owner. There must be tons
of silver, gold and copper coins under ground just out of sight

If I recall it was either an egyptian or greek king that was told to throw something of great value into the sea in order to avoid ruin. This king did not throw a coin, but a ring. Can't remember the name of the king but this was supposedly the foundations of throwing coins into bodies of water.
