Some of my favorite large cents

Photographed my whole large cent collection last week, so here are some of the best ones. Will I be banished from the forum for competing with the eagerly anticipated "copper for the weekend" thread!? image

Photographing these taught me a hard lesson- copper coins in white (NGC, old ANACS) slabs yield terrible images even with a good digital camera. I have a kickass, totally choice 1821 that I will add to this thread after I am done sawing it out of its NGC plastic this weekend.

Just to clarify, I don't intend to put any of these up for sale on the BST or elsewhere any time soon- just sharing them for your enjoyment & discussion.

    Double wow! The 1804 and 1811 may not be the 'prettiest' ones on display here, but to me they are the most impressive. Very nice!

    I certainly agree with the above statement, although I prefer the 1855! Super awesome coin there!

    Just imagine living back then and having one of these babies in your hand, fresh from the bank the year it was minted; bright and shiny. That 1854 looks cool.

    What a great group of large cents! I've always found the 1796's difficult to find in decent condition, so I liked those the best!

    Updated with a few new pictures- 1821 and an 1850. Got the picture of my 1821 out of the Heritage archives, where it was sold 5 years ago, housed it a PCGS slab. It was PCGS AU55 and is currently NGC AU55. I'd love to bust it out of the plastic to enjoy it and take better pics, but I am concerned that I'm hurting myself if I go to sell it later on.

    I'm really enjoying your thread. Just got an attribution guide and I'm trying to match your coins up to the sheldon numbers and Die states. I must admit it is very satisfying and enjoyable.

    Love that 1798 S148. Alot of character

    Also , I love the 1794 for the state of preservation it's in and the 1804 because it's an 1804. Heck I like them all! Nice Coppers ............image

    I love the 1818- very attractive. The die cracks are so incredibly cool that it almost looks like they were engraved there.

    I sold almost all of my copper and am afraid to buy more in my hot, humid climate (Louisiana), but I sure enjoy looking at yours.image

    Found that one listed that on ebay about 2 years ago as a "regular" 1803, with a BIN of $180.image Can you say "cherry pick"?


    Your 1817 is a N-11

    I guess I have two N-11s in different die states. They look so different that I thought they had to be two different die marriages! Here's the comparison:

    Great coins!

    What you need to do with the NGC slabs. Black construction paper cut just a bit smaller than the slab. Cut a circle for the coin (different sizes for different denomination). Cover the slab such that the coin (and maybe a small amt of white) show. Take the shot. That takes care of the gross underexposure you get from the snowblindness the slab imparts on the camera.
