How many different ways do you aquire coins for your collection?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 13,112 ✭✭✭✭✭
For me, I am a dinosaur.

I have collected from:

a. pocket change;

b. purchased/traded with other collectors;

c. purchased/traded at B&M shops;

d. purchased/traded at coin shows;

e. purchased/traded at coin club meetings;

f. acquired from banks [singles or rolls];

g. acquired from parents and other relatives;

h. purchased from non collectors;

i. purchased from pawn shops;

j. purchased from flea markets;

k. purchased from antique stores;

l. picked up/dug up from the ground;

m. aquired from public phones and vending machine coin return slots;

n. received in change from merchants; and

o. bought from forum members via PM (my one "Modern", high tech way of acquiring].

To date I have never:

a. acquired through an auction [live on the floor at the auction or by phone, mail or internet bid];

b. acquired in response to dealer direct advertising;

c. acquired through a want list;

d. acquired by ripping the unsophisticated;

e. acquired from a TV coin show [Robert Chambers and Coin Vault];

f. acquired from Coin World or other ads; and

g. acquired via private treaty where one or more representatives of the buyer and seller prevent the buyer and seller from dealing directly with each other.

Maybe one day I should expand my horizons and broaden the ways that I acquire coins.

How about you?

And did I leave out any ways to acquire [other than theftimage]

    I've aquired coins by most those methods, except private treaty- sounds kinda complex, like you're buying a country or something.'

    I'd even buy a coin from Fidel Castro if he had good stuff !image

    I have done most of the things listed. One that I didn't see is to sort through junk bags. My father used to invest in junk silver and I used to love searching the bags.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver

    Realone.

    I have bought from dealers [face to face]. I have never bought in response to dealer advertising [i.e. ad in Coin World or direct mail, etc.].

    I do not have any reason for not buying at auction. I just have not yet. Maybe some day I will bdid at an auction.

    A large part of my collection has been acquired simply by scrounging around various places where I can see the coin "in hand" with my eyes. Further, I only spend discretionary dollars on coins, thus most of my acquisitions have been modest. If I was not married and without kids, I would have much more discretionary dollars to spend on the hobby. Not the case though.

    Hoards, Cookie Jars, Rolls from banks, US mint, Coin shows, Coin club, BST, eBay, websites, "Need a Penny, Take A Penny" cups at convenience stores and gas stations... and on a rare occasion from an unsolicited offer.

    My inventory numbering system has a code number for the different venues in which I purchase coins. I broke it down into seven categories.

    2 – NGC, PCGS forums
    3 – Coin Show
    4 – Coin Shop
