Why do people buy Empty GSA Morgan Dollar Boxes with Certificates

Why do people buy these GSA boxes with certificates. Is it merely a collectible, something to showcase that particular coin, or used for more nefarious means? (Resale with a coin to try to show it is "certified" to get more of a premium from unsuspecting buyers?)

Because they previously bought a GSA dollar without the box or with a damaged box.

The certificate number is based on the date of the coin. 1882s have a certificate where the forst two numbers are 82, 1883s begin with 83 and so on.

All of the above, I suspect.

Sometimes, especially early on when the TPG craze hit... the coins were slabbed and the boxes discarded... so many lack the 'provenance'... which is important to some collectors. Cheers, RickO

The Chinese needed examples so they can start knocking them off (copying them).

There are already many copies of the GSA Certs out there. I know a dealer in IN that had them custom printed. You really can't tell them from the ones that shipped with the coins.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!
