1964 Kennedy PR68DCAM on the bay - accurate description?

eBay

I've been wanting a nice Proof 1964 Kennedy for a while now. I know they're really a common type coin but who cares - I just want one.

Anyway, eBay being the dumping ground it is, sometimes doesn't seem like a good place to buy coins. Take this DCAM Kennedy for example. The seller states,

<< <i> "One small spot on obverse near chin brought the grade down from 69 to 68. >>

" Does this sound correct? Or perhaps it spotted after being graded and it's now a PR67 or PR66?

I think I'm going to Baltimore next month - perhaps I'll look for a nice Kennedy there. Ebay being the dumping grounds that it is. image

Seems ok to me. If small spots like that bother you go for a 69 or 70 image

It is really hard to determine what the seller is talking about based on those pics. There is a spot above the N in IN and that could account for the 68 grade due to the fact it is very conspicuous. But then again, that might be a tick in the holder and there is another spot we cannot see. Otherwise the coin looks pretty decent.

Since the seller has a return policy and decent feedback, I wouldn't hesitate buying it.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

The spot is a tad distracting. The date and grade are in the sweet spot for a high grade complete type set. The PR 69 DCAMs are too expensive. Any later date isn't pure silver and past some people's date cut off on a complete type set. The photographs are pretty dark. I'll bet the coin looks decent in hand. It all depends on how that spot looks when you are holding the slab.

If you don't care about cameo contrast you can save yourself hundreds and get a common type coin. A 1964 JFKs in superb, attractive, no problem, DCAM aren't really common at all, in fact you will have to look around a bit. If you find a good seller on eBay that actually might be the best venue for this coin. One day Russ might sell one. image

You know I'd stay away. This is one area, sight unseen I would literally take Russ's words and he says he's not that impressed.

I've got to agree with Russ on this one...chances are the coin is not a newly grade coin as I doubt PCGS would have given it a 68 with that spot lately.

Keep in mind though that spots and marks seem larger than they really are in photos.

Maybe it's just the image, but the reverse cameo looks way too weak to be a DCAM.

The coin number is on the slab, which indicates it was graded before PCGS tightened up on DCAMs for Kennedies. Bottom line -- if Russ does not like it, you do not want it.

So it's not just the image, but rather a poster child for designation review.
