GRADES IN: 86 fleer bkb rip....purchased at a card show today

very small card show in a local mall today. one guy had lots of vintage and 3 unopened packs (1 - 86 fleer bkb, 1 - 79 cello with ozzie showing, 1 - three stooges). i had been talking to him off and on for the past couple of days. we talked about the history of the 86 fleer pack and how this was the last pack, blah, blah, blah and how an old lady purchased 18 and pulled 3 jordans. i was definitely skeptical of the pack.

i slept on it last night and when i showed up today it was still there. we talked some more and i ended up pulling the trigger after talking him down on the price. another guy was at his table and he asked if i was going to open the pack because he'd never see anyone open one before. needless to say "I PULLED A JORDAN" and was shaking so hard i could not put it in the holder...i was able to get it into a penny sleeve and then i handed it to the guy next to me to put in the card saver. the guys around me (including my 12 year old son) were ecstatic. it definitely brought the spirits up of the guys who were having a slow day...it was a first for many of us.

i will post a scan in a few. i was so excited, just wanted to share the news when i came in. btw, my wife was very happy as well. image

Thanks,

David (LD_Ferg)

  • I would say a 9 if the slight OC L/R doesnt get you and the bottom left corner isnt dinged.
  • ldfergldferg Posts: 6,755 ✭✭✭
no dings on any of the cards....scanning the remainder of the pack now.

i would be happy with an 8 but a 9 would even be better. centering was great throughout the pack. i don't think any would garner a qualifier for centering.

the blackman is one of the best centered i've ever seen.

What kind of response did the dealer have that you bought it from? He's probably kicking himself right now, but it will probably generate a lot more business for him. (Assuming he's not at home busting all the rest of his unopened stuff)
  • Congrats, that is a heck of a pull. I would be thrilled, too!

On a side note, is that a red print dot above and to the left of his head? I am speaking of the area between his face and arm that is holding the ball?

Amazing pack. Looks like you should 9 on the Jordan, Herb, Gus, Buck, Willis, and Isiah sticker. If you can squeeze a 10 out of Blackman that's a $350 card. Short of pulling a Jordan 10, I can't imagine a better pack.
  • "the blackman is one of the best centered i've ever seen."

which black man? you pulled quite a few in that pack....

(sorry I'm having a curb your enthusiasm moment lol)

Stan, that's part of the card. Probably a guy in the background wearing a red shirt.

I know there is a red/pink shirt in the background, but it looks like a print dot over that. Look very closely. image

"Do we even have proof that the OP bought an unopened pack? I don't mean to play devil's advocate, but I think it's probable that the OP is an unopened pack seller himself and is trying to generate a buzz for 86-87 Fleer packs, of which he has a box of searched and resealed packs at home. Once demand is sufficiently created, he will undoubtedly hock his illegitimate wares to the unsuspecting members of these boards.

You all are naive if you believe that there are unsearched 86-87 Fleer packs out there. Busting wax is a sucker's game that always ends up in the ripper wasting his money.

    How'd I do?

the dealers son was as excited as i was. he kept saying he'd never seen one pulled. i told him i was glad to be the first.

the dealer himself was an older guy, retired from the military and seemed to happy for me. i wrote a check for the pack and he said if the check bounced i had to return the pack. i think this one pull made all of the remaining dealers glad they hung around. the guy next to me could not believe i was going to open the pack and when i did he started freaking out and yelling "he pulled it, he pulled it" and then the other dealers started coming around to look at it. it was so funny to see me shaking so much. after i was able to put it in the penny sleeve i gave it to the yelling guy to put it in the card saver. my son said "i didn't know that was his rookie".....and then we left, i took him to all-star practice and i went back to the mall to talk to the dealers as they packed the remaining stuff and left. it was a great time.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

    lee,
    you got me...crap, i'm busted.

i was offered an 86 fleer empty box but did not take it...and i do have 9 - 86 fleer wrappers (all with a .40 price tag).

this pull did start some stories of "i remember when these boxes were $12 each, etc...."

  • CDnuts, see the difference? Outside of that print dot, I say he has a nice shot at an 8. Either way, a great pull, and a nicely centered pack of 86' Fleer.

Even if there is a red print dot over the guy's red shirt, it wouldn't be noticeable enough to keep the card from a 9.

There is no "if" about it, Lee, there is a print dot. From my experiences, this is what keep alot of great looking Jordans in 8 holders, instead of 9 holders.

    Nice Jordan!!!
How much for 122, 11, 123? and the willis and mullin if your wanting do get rid of those they would probably be upgrades for me.

    Hi David,

Congrats, once again. A great day for you and your son. I am happy for you guys.

The scan I posted is not mine, just a borrowed scan from Ebay to show Lee what I was talking about. My Jordan is in custody of the bank, so I could not scan mine as a reference. image

i'll probably send in the entire pack to be graded. i'll revise this thread if i do.

It's always tough when the bank forecloses on a Jordan rookie.

I say a shot a 9 despite a print dot which I'm not seeing anyway..Awsome card and pack!

Besides if this could get a 9 with this huge old blob the Jordan has a great shot.

That's not a print dot. It's an abscess that formed where they injected steroids into the card.
