    40 (I would like to see a stronger "LIBERTY" on a 45).

Looks harshly cleaned, so imo it' a no-grade.

What he said. As a "details" grade.

I would be more inclined to say VF range. I would expect to see some luster remaining in the protected areas on an XF coin.

Not if it's been scrubbed up...
  • It might have something to do with the lightning. This coin is currently in NGC holder and I will post the grade later.

Thats a strong VF 35. The 1871 is a VF 35 at best.]

35/40. Liberty needs to be stronger on a 45.

Yeah, I gotta go vf on that one,
  • Here is the smaller version image of the coin for comparison. I think a close-up image makes a difference.

I wouldn't like it at all as a 45...and I'm not all that excited about it as a 40...but between those two grades, I would definately call it a 40.

I do not like the coin at that grade. Too high

a cleaned VF-35 is more accurate. At the high

grade, it will be a hard sell to get ones money

    out of it.

I agree with Bear, and others.....I'm surprised to see it graded, and really surprised to see it graded as a 45.

another example of the major TPGs 'net grading' dipped, stripped and cleaned stuff. sad really.

Here is a perfect example of what constitutes 90% of what is floating around most bourse floors waiting for that buyer who comes along and pays 45 money for the coin becuase the labels says it is what it is. These are the coins that bury folks when time to re-sell.

Shocking... that coin in a 45 holder is a disgrace.

Exactly right. There are nice coins around...but you have to wade through a lot of sludge to come face to face with them. It's definately worth the work!

And that is why going to shows and looking at coins in hand helps sharpen grading skills and knowledge to buy the right coin and not something that is an embarrassment

  • Do you think NGC certified this coin to make their company look bad? I agree that xf40 is more appropriate grade, but since the image I provided was a close up using macro, it pick up all the details and it looks like its been cleaned. I bet you, if you try to make the other coin in a close up with macro it might come out almost the same. If you didn't see the first image I used of this coin and used this picture instead, would your comments be the same?

I wouldn't use the 59-O as a comparison. It's a date that's very common in MS and is graded extremely toughly (most of the time) in grades below AU-58 and MS. Here is a coin of ours for example. We sent it in raw and it came back XF-40 the first time, 45 the second. We were sure it'd at least hit AU-50 as the coin has good luster which my photos don't show. Also, the reverses is everybit AU-55/58 in hand.

(PS as for the OP coin, it's no better than a cleaned VF-35 IMHO)
