well i ripped them, the football are not good no good cards and the bottom 4-5 in each pack had the gum soaked through, i'm glad i didn't get a good card in those last 4-5 that would have sucked.
the theismann card is ruined on to pack 2

78 not bad i wish i got 2 of these instead of 2 football. very happy wiht the belanger (its the orioles fan in me, always one of my favorite players)
got a real nice rose what do you all think it will grade? the 2 best cards are my favorites atleast (belanger and rose) maybe the reynolds has a shot at a 9-9.5-10
well that's it. not a great rip but i would do it again.

I sat on the sidelines for this vintage rip (thanks, Gary, for making me a little gun shy, you MFer...). I'll jump in next time.
Just a thought on the 80/81 basketball. I've never opened any of those.... but I did by 12 packs of 80/81 Topps A&BC English Soccer cards off of eBay last year. Same design, front and back, same number of cards per pack, and a large number of cards were shot due to gum damage. Is it possible that Topps used a different brand/type/chemical makeup of gum that year?
I opened a box of 80/81 before and found nothing like what you guys are getting. I'm thinking that the fact that the cards basically have holes in the middle makes it easier for any kind of moisture to seep through the entire pack, whereas in regular years the moisture won't get past the second card. This is all assuming the boxes are stored in less than ideal conditions. If they are kept in a cool environment then everything should be fine.
My basketball pack the only damaged card was the card that the gum was stuck to and a slight wax stain on the back card. Other than that I saw no damage in the packs. Many were in the 8 to 9 range. Wish the card had been in there..
Here's some scans of Neil's cards. He asked me to pass along this message in the same thread -
I stand corrected on the Basketball packs, they were perfect. The gum was not even stuck to the one card. The scan with three are my highlights, the scans with a bunch have pack loading issues or centering. The Football were a different story, basically half of each pack was bled through with gum, destroying at least 5-8 of the cards.
Well, no Murray or Molitor, but this is the best card to come out of my two packs. I'm very happy. Corners couldn't be better and centering is perfect. It's only a question of very minor print dots as to whether this is a 10. There are a couple more possible 10's in there too but they are commons. Also, it looks like the tiniest of tilt on here in the scan, but it definitely doesn't show up in person.
Very sharp Bench. I agree that you may have a 10 there, if the top left corner doesn't exhibit the slightest touch.

I've been reading this board for a year or so. This is my first post. I wanted to say thanks for putting me on to BBCE. I just bought a box of 78, 80, and 82 football from him for the first time. Had fun opening the 82's this weekend (no LT, but two Montana's and a Lott). I enjoy reading these wax break threads.
I started collecting as a kid opening a lot of wax from the early to mid 80s. I remember mowing lawns and thinking that the next area of grass I would cover would earn me two wax packs etc. Only got back into it 2-3 years ago after being away for 15. Now I like to buy players I love that I never could own as a kid (Unitas, Brown, Sayers, Tarkenton, Griese, Namath etc.).

Sounds like a lot of fun. 80s Topps football rules.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
Opened my 2 BKB and 4 BB packs today. I will try to scan a few
The BKB were terrible only one decent card in the two packs and the best card was fused to the gum. The 78 BB were in great shape but all but zero star cards. The only saving grace is a few low pop commons that are 10 material.
It was still fun and I don't do these rips to make money. I usually trade off the cards to someone working on a raw set. If anyone wants to trade me there 80-81 BKB PM me. I have about 2 sets worth of 78's BB all from boxes and packs I have opened in the last year. I do submit card to PSA so you won't being getting any 10's, but still alot of MINT cards
<< <i>Nick (Nam) pulled one last week from our break. >>
CRAP! I mean congrats Nick.
I guess if I really wanted the card I should just pony up the money and buy it. I have quite a few singles from this set that I purchased about 20 years ago.
I guess I was rewarded for stepping up and buying the last 4 basketball packs which completed the "selling it" phase. Now if only I would have pulled a centered copy with no print defect under Magic Johnson.
Hey guys I have a newbie question for you. It seems if gum stains can be a big problem when busting wax packs. Is there any advantage of wax packs compared to cello packs? Just wondering what if any difference is there between the two.
Thanks,
ADAM
Currently Collecting 1975 Topps Football PSA 9's - 10's
I had to delay shipping of my packs until earlier this week. Sorry about the delay. On to the cards. I added a box of 2000 Upper Deck Legends baseball to my order. I really liked this set when it came out. The autos look really nice. I'm pretty sure I saw someone else post that they collect them, can't remember who though.
I'd love to put up a nice scan of an Eddie Murray rc now but that would have just been way too amazing. Did anyone pull a Murray, Trammell/Molitor, or a Ryan?
Those Murray & Molitor RCs seem few and far between. Always seems like you get about 10 Steve Swishers first.

Hopefully Monday will bring some wax.
Here are the only 2 rookies from my 3 packs
Here are the 9 salvageable cards from my 2 basketball packs. I have always wanted to pull a Maravich, and finally did, but has moldy gum on it

No Montana I got the other 49ers QB too. Interestingly the Basketball cards were all clean except for minor gum stain on the gum card.
