<< <i>How many cards in the 80/81 basketball packs? >>

8 cards (3 small cards on each larger card), one stick of gum, and one team miniposter, and a lot of hope that either gets quickly dashed or quickly validated.

  • Got a Larry Bird rookie, the one with Jack Sikma. Of course it was the one with gum stuck to it and the card is completely worthless. Gum soaked all the way through the card. Celebrated a friends b-day all day and waited til I got home tonight to open my basketball pack. Wasnt worth the wait. Hope everyone else fairs better.

    Good Evening,
Wow, Now I am looking forward to my Packs with negative anticipation. So at the very least, If I get Crap, I should be OK with that. Anyway in the Future and I have done at least 4-5 of these rips, we need to do a little bit more research and as much as I think Steve is the Bomb, I am hearing that he could have provided a product that is just a little better. I mean really, can the Seller not open at least one pack in a Box to determine the overall quality of Said Box??? Sorry, don't mean to ever impune Steve's reputation, but give me a break, I have already heard of 5 posters with quality issues with the BasketBall packs, don't even have mine yet...and am not holding out much hope, perhaps Steve shoudn't have sold this Box...Is that ever possible ???. Would love to continue to spend money doing this type of thing...But come on ...Lets get real.
    Thanks
    Neil

I may keep my pack unopened......not sure..
  • I didnt mean to complain about the quality. I got 3 packs of the 78 baseball and all were surpisingly well centered. Checked the pop report and have a few that have a slim shot at a 10 on cards that have no graded 10's. Plus I got a Pete Rose that has a legit shot at a 10. The basketball however only had about 2 cards that were not ruined by gum or wax.

Probably a good idea from the looks of things.

    My $0.02.

It looks like like the basketball packs may have been stored for some time in a very warm, humid place. These conditions typically "melt" the gum. Water damage typically warps and stains the cards, and there are ususally water stains on the box (remember the 85 football packs from a few rips ago). I'm sure steve would not send out packs with damage if he could tell. The high heat damage is not evident until you open the packs. Typically, the packs themselves and the box look normal. Just luck of the draw with stuff that has been sitting around for 30 years.

<< <i>Got mine in the mail today as well. Here are the highlights. One Note on the 80/81 Basketball.. my packs had obviosuly seen some moisture at some time resulting in gum residue squirting through perferations on the cards. Essentially half of each pack until you hit the oversized team photo has damaged backs or fronts. We may wantr to avoid this product on future rips.

Water damage to the one card??
  • leathtechleathtech Posts: 3,191
My basketball packs where in good shape... only the cards next to the gum came out bad. Football was the complete opposite several cards in each pack had water damage.

I'm sure Steve would not send us poor packs, that would be a very poor business model. I think this is the chance you take with 25+ year old wax.

I agree you cannot tell, I have opened GAI graded packs that looked perfect on the outside have terrible looking cards inside. If there is any heat exposure the moisture inside the gum(yes there is some) is going to start condensing on the inside of the packs and be soaked up into the cards.

    Hello!
It's unfortunate that some are getting packs with mildew damage from the gum. When we were informed that this rip was filled up and possible, we pulled the best boxes we had available based on box condition and pack condition. The best we can do is pull a box that has packs which appear clean and fresh. Good luck to all! Thanks! Steve
  • Great Response, all pack rips are a gamble, I haven't gotten mine yet hopefully today, but will not cry about broken gum, slight possible water stain. image

That is why Steve is the best in the biz. I dont think I have ever saw a major distrubitor hop in a forum and give a heads up. Way to go Steve! Indeed vintage pack rips are a dice roll.

On a side note joejo20, that Schmidt looks money.
  • Thanks Guys!

I kinda quickly opened them up and scanned them then left, so the cards are not in front of me now. I will give more details tonight when I get a chance to inspect them.
  • And one more thing, the gum tasted horrible!!

Steve - thanks for doing this for us... I think the majority of us understand the risks of busting old wax - I enjoyed the packs and hope we can do something like this again soon... I see you have a box of 86 Fleer basketball in stock now!!!!

  • Here is the back of the Larry Bird I got from my one pack. BTW, the 78s were awesome. Most of mine were well centered and a lot of them are submittable IMO.

Correctomundo... it's a gamble opening older wax and often times the packs, and even (cardboard) box will not tell the tale of exposure to humidity at some point.

    << <i>

Water damage to the one card?? >>

I don't think it was necessarily water damage, but the gum appears to have melted due to heat and humidity at some point, and it then oozed from the back card through the perferations of the adjacent card until you hit the oversized team photo. Half of each basketball pack is essentially valueless.

I don't blame Steve, but I will not be ripping 80/81 Basketball ever again.

The eagle has landed. Four of the basketball packs (that you guys have now soured me on) with the rip to come later tonight. I'm very glad I added five 1975 Minis to my order.

FS: 7 pieces of pack fresh 1978 gum.
The baseball packs were great. I'll post a few later. image
  • Well opened my 3 packs, 2 baseball and one basketball.

Nothing great in the 2 baseball but most sharp and centered, might be worth a sub on one or two for a 10.

Well got a Bird in the basketball but was the second to last card so has back damage, bummer as the card looks awesome other wise.

Over all well worth it for the run down memory lane, thanks to Leiascards and Steve for making this happen!!!!!

Cant wait for the next one!

Here is a picture of some of my backs. I hope Steve pulls from a different box for those who he has yet to ship....

  • What kind of Bird? The bird and magic or other???? Don't leave us hanging like that!

First of four packs, and I get a Bird/Erving/Magic untouched by the gum, but the evil centering monster got me.

Nam, that's a nice looking card. T/B looks dead on.

You got lucky it wasn't hit by the gum moster.

Nothing much else to speak of in the other 3 packs. Gum aside, a fun rip (mostly because I hit the big card).

    Nam,
That's what I was hoping for in order to start working on getting it signed for my signed rookie collection. Would you cut me a good deal on it (The Bird/Magic/Erving)? PM me. Thanks,

Nice pull Nick. Even with that centering the card commands a little premium because there's no black snow.

It's weird that the Dr. J panel is nearly perfectly centered. Nice pull Nick.

Climate control is key for card quality in these packs. Steve may purchase product from someone who claims the box or case has been properly stored, but there's no way to really know if that is true until you open the packs. I've bought 72 OPC packs from Steve that exhibited the same issues with the melted gum which is even worse than corner dings, IMO.

I bought 2 packs, no gum damage, a few with bad corners/edges. Not much star power, but a neat trip down memory lane and I'll be ready for the next one.
