Morgan Dollars - different kind of leafs...

When I examine my Morgan Dollars, I see that some of the dollars have leafs that are incomplete, and others have full leafs. This applies specifically to the two leafs nearest to ON in ONE. See pictures.

Is there a name for this?

Hmm, what is the year and MM? Looks like the ones in the 1st pic have had the detail polished away.
MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

As the mint workers polished the dies, detail would be lost. Sometimes, there would be gouges in the dies, sometimes file lines. These would be "die markers" used in identifying the die marriage that made the coin, commonly referred to as the VAM number. Over-polished leaves appear on a number of different VAMs. If you can post pics of the obverse and reverse, someone here should be able to put you on the right track to identify the VAM. Also, check out www.vamworld.com.

  • They were most likely polished away, as clarkbar04 stated.

Good observation.....Morgan Die pairs are all different, or we wouldnt be able to classify them with their own VAM number.

Although sometimes very slight, each pair has some sort of variance due to polishing, punching of mintmarks, hubbing, engraving, polishing, gouges, etc as mentioned.

The 1921 coins are easily distinguished from the earlier Morgans, and you can see that with the naked eye. Some features are significantly different than the older coins.

Good luck, it sounds like you are a Vammer and may not even know it yet image

  • Wouldn't it be leaves?
  • Yes, I think so... I'm not a native speaker. I wrote leaves first, but then I became unsure... Felt like I was writing that the Morgans were leaving... image

"Leafs" is not gramatically correct, but at least it cannot be misunderstood image
