My company allows reasonable personal use of the computer so long as we avoid prohibited sites (porn, gambling, discussion boards that discuss our companies stock, etc). It is generally never an issue if you get your job done. --Jerry

If the employer doesn't care and you get your job done, no one's hurt by it.

Part of the perks of working for yourself is that you don't have to worry about things like this. Of course, I have a lot of other things to worry about because I do work for myself. By the way, I posted to this thread because I am trying to increase my average posts per day. See thread below or above.

A good rule of thumb is that if you have to ask if something is ethical then it's not ethical.

    I'm at work.
Edited: If my boss doesn't like it, he can just go wallow in his huge pile of Seated Quarters.

I've not seen any discussion of your company stock here, but doesn't it meet the other two criteria?

A large part of my network admin job is making sure that the employees aren't visiting sites like this during working hours.

If it interferes with your work then no. If not, I see no reason why it would unethical to spend time on the forum.

Then again, I'm not a big rules guy.

Don't you mean "only if you don't get caught!"?

What am I going to do if I get caught? Fire myself?image

Seriously if you are working, work. If you want to goof off, don't expect your employer and co-workers to be thrilled, and don't be surprised when the company can't afford to offer you a promotion or a raise because they keep getting shafted by their employees.

It is not only unethical, it's grounds for termination. However, I'm not your boss image

Depends. In my office we rank it with texting, IM and long bathroom breaks. Keep it in moderation and I won't fire anyone.
