Another nasty morgan dollar going for way too much on ebay

This one is just plain ugly and might even be fake. What do you think? Aren't those colors just gruesome? And the 9 looks wrong too. I guess saying it was in a fire makes people think it might be real.

imageQuid pro quo. Yes or no?
  • Looks, literally, like BLOOD money or rather BLOODY money.
Is that really a key date?
It would not take much to clean it up and I'll bet it's MS, maybe even 64-65.

  • Well, there's only 110,000 ever made, PCGS list the 1894 in G4 condition at $800, it looks like crap yes but... it is just a wee bit on the very rare side.

Anyways, at least you know the seller didn't clean it for sure! image

BTW: Looking past the gunk, no coin dealer graded that at XF or AU, there's far too much ware on the hair line and the breast feathers are smooth on the reverse.

I'd really want to make sure that there isnt' a mink mark hidden on the reverse!

Seriously though, what ever bag or gunk it was stored in, whatever crap has covered it, fire damaged, smoke, whatever, if that NCG restoration service cleans it up without screwing up the surface, that could grade in VG or even F12... it's absolutely better than G4 if that gunk is off it for certin. Look past the gunk and look at the edges and high points, it has ware but it's not all the way down to G4. IMHO (okay... go ahead a flame me!) image

I wonder if the gunk is hiding a removed mint mark?
