So Ken Griffey Jr. hates coins?
He pays his teamate Josh Fogg back with $1500 in cents.
Ken Jr was quoted as saying:
<< <i>“I’m a man of my word,” said Griffey. “And when you owe a man $1,500, you pay him. And I’d like to thank the lovely people at National City Bank for helping me with this joke. There isn’t a whole lot you can do with pennies. Just think, each box weighs 16 pounds, so the man has 60 bowling balls in his locker.” >>

<< <i>Someone outta tell Ken that he just gave Fogg AT LEAST $1,600 worth of metal, and probably much more assuming a decent distribution of pre '82 cents. Better than 15 pieces of small green paper anyday! >>
At the amount of money these guys make daily, I don't think the extra $100 factors into things....he likely would have done it for double the amount just for the funny factor.

<< <i>Where do you get your metal smelted for free? >>
How much is a roll of 1964 quarters worth? Standard answer at spot of $16.74 is 12x face, or about $120. BUT WHERE WOULD YOU GET THEM SMELTED FOR FREE? It doesnt matter Dbldie, because its just a commodity until there is an end user. You are always full of negative energy when responding to my posts. Are you unhappy with your life pal?

You can sell them on ebay and usually get around 2x face.
I have found power in the mysteries of thought.
It is always a question of knowing and seeing, and not that of believing.
Our virtues, and our failings are inseparable, like force, and matter. When they separate, man is no more.

<< <i>ARod.....$28,000,000 a year, 155 games, 3 at bats per avg game.......$60,215 per AB, thats alot of pennies >>
Thats slightly misleading as it doesnt account for his defense, or practice sessions. Take my line of work as an example. $75,000 a year....average of maybe 18 fires per year...thats $4,166 per fire I go to. But consider all the other runs I go on as well, ambulance assists, auto fires, carbon monoxide alarms, false fire runs, etc.

my exFIL was at the house on Madison and (Hamlin? or so) He was out multiple times per day in the winter. So even less per run for him.

<< <i>You are right Bochi.....its probably like me giving you $1.50! >>
That would certainly be like $1600 to me

Actually, you hit on something.
If he sold the cents, individually on ebay, with the picture and the story, he would likely earn more than a few dollars per penny

I was thinking the same thing, except he could autograph the boxes and sell them that way.
The other thing that comes to mind is why Griffey would owe Fogg $1,500. Is there a more plausible explanation than he lost a bet? Surely this would run afoul of the article of the Constitution that gives Congress the responsibility to investigate Major League Baseball.
