1572 Massacre of the Huguenots

I just posted this on the darkside because I need help researching this one and there are some real guru's there, but wanted to share it on this board also.
It is dated 1572 and shows Gregory XIII on the obverse and the
reverse shows a depiction of the Massacre of the Huguenots.
It measures 9 on the Mionnet scale. It is a silver piece just about the size of a half dollar.
I see a reference in the Spink catalogue to a silver piece that is mounted.

    There are known restrikes of this Papal Medal. Your pictures are not conclusive. Have you tried researching the F. Mazio Catalog? You may be able to purchase at Jencius Coins. Respectfully, John Curlis

    Europe in the 16th century was a place of extreme religious turmoil.

    This event was of extreme importance. The War of the Three Henry's, which ensued following the massacre, led to the rise of to Bourbons the the French throne.

    Whoever designed the medallion should have put a calendar on it somewhere....cuz thanks to Pope G13 we have a 365 year...hmm.

    That is awesome. I would count it an honor to have that blood lineage, but only have them as 'spiritual' ancestors, so to speak.

    Your family's timing was right as England was warmly accepting Protestants into the land after old Henry VIII's denunciation of Roman Catholicism earlier in that century. Good thing they didn't go to Ireland... image

    Me too, Russ. It is thought that some of my ancestors fled instead to Utrecht and then to North America in 1670.
