Tall, yet true, story....

So, here we go.

Round about 1984 or so, I was at a grocery store in San Antonio, Broadway St, HEB. I was at the checkout line and just about to pay when I noticed something strange in the till. At that point I had just started checking out what was in the drawer any time I'd buy something.

Well, turned out the coins were half dollars so I asked the cashier if I could buy them. I told her I'd give her 5 bucks for them. She said she had already sold them to another cashier. The other cashier was next to her and told her to go ahead and sell them to me so I said I'd give her 10 bucks so she and the other cashier could share the money. So, I handed her the money and she handed me the two half dollars along with 9 bucks change. I told her it was ok, she could keep the change. She said, why, it's only a dollar. She also told me that the coins were from an old person that came in and bought some stuff. Crazy!

So, what pray tell were the coins? Well, believe it or not, I still have them and doubt I'll ever sell them as they have to be the coolest coins I've ever purchased at face value. So, checkem out and tell me how you think I made out. They were most likely stolen, but what was I to do, let them fall into someone elses hand?

The 8 of 1811 looks like it was punched inverted. Are they all like that?

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Very cool and I will award you the winner of the person who has received the oldest half dollars in your change.

    Congratulations!

Ah, I see.You didn't state that you took it back, just that she had questioned keeping the change. In that case, there are few opportunities that will match your find. Respectfully, John Curlis

Just curious why you would think they were "most likely stolen" when the cashier told you an old person came in and spent them? My first assumption would be that they were spending their "old money" without realizing the value.

Nice coins by the way. image

Who knows, I just figured someone stole them and then spent them, old person... I think would have to be mighty old to have held onto these till 1980's.

Anyone else sad in that some old person had to dig through their coin collection to buy groceries?

This may not be the case at all. Someone may have come across these "old junky" coins finding them in a jar or back of draw. It may have been preceived as a small windfall to the finder, especially after the store accepted these junk coins. Whether it was a senior coming across them while looking for something else or a youngster going through items left by grandpa/ma, there are too many reasons these could have been spent that do not involve digging through a collection.
