Jeez, I just checked how long I've been here. March of 2001??? WHERE have the last SEVEN years gone??? When I was a kid seven years was an eternity. Now it seems like a week.

I heard the boards were more informative and threads had good substance back then. Too bad we can't go back to the way it was.

Edit- why can't I spell "too" correctly?

This is a fine thread haliday. Remember also that "back in the day" not every Tom, Dick and Harry was trying to run up their post scores. Many fine members have left due to childish threads about "What I did in school today" or "How many beers can you drink". As Goose alluded to, the spelling was actually correct and sentences had some structure. I'd think that folks who join here should realize that there are millions of people worldwide who read the CU and that they don't give a rat's a$$ about your 50¢ cherry-pick off of e-bay. Save the 1st grade humor and THINK before you post.

  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Yes you did, only because you are an old timer.

    Steve

    Good for you.

    are you serious?

e-bay needs to do something to protect peeps paying by check,
seems far too fuqn easy to scam & get away w/ it right now.

at least based on my experience.

Does anyone have a link to the first post made on the forums? I know they changed the software for the forum at some point, so I'm not sure if the archives go all the way back to the beginning.

Found this interesting post in the archives. It's from the early days of the set registry.

I think Steve (Winpitcher) & myself joined the same month.

Any board I've ever been on (many, many) was better in the old days. When I was a kid we had to walk to school through 6 foot snowdrifts with a 50 pound bag of coal for the fire under each arm AND it was uphill both ways...............

Yup, agreed with that Eric. A lot of guys have either left the hobby or gone onto other venues.

Still here. There were tons of kids 12-17 and it was all about modern and basketball.

I think that the moment the board started going downhill can be seen directly to the left of this post. I still read just about everything, but rarely post anymore. This is one of 2 or 3 boards I consider "home."

It says I joined May 2001, but honestly, it starts to be a blur. The last 10 years have seemed like 2 or 3.

The decade of the 00's is going to be over in another year and a half? Blows me away.

Some valid points tho they could be worded a bit nicer in deference to newcomers who may not appreciate the tone of such waxing nostalgically.

I also call CU my home - and prefer to keep the cup half full.

I miss many of the people who used to post here and have moved on. I read this board for almost 8 months before joining in.

People respond well to those who lead by example - so all those who have "substance" - please enlighten us?

I never grow tired of learning.

PSAtan / Scumbi kept it really lively.

Although I hardly ever post, I am on here on a daily basis and always enjoy the chatter. I remember a lot of the good old fellas. Sorry to see some of the more colorful ones gone. Still the best message board as far as knowledge and helpful guys in my humble opinion...

I actually was reading this board daily around 2001, when I first checked the price guide and the 1989 Donruss Ken Griffey 10's were valued at $1750. Wonder who was snapping them up at those prices on eBay, because they were moving even at those prices. Ouch.
Just glad to be here with everyone.

I wish I could remember the user in question - FatCat, maybe? - but I'll always remember his outrage when everybody switched to SpongeBob icons for a few days. Plenty of great battles and meltdowns back in the day.

    Fred

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

  • MorgothMorgoth Posts: 3,950 ✭✭✭
Joined the first month you could I believe (Feb 01). I miss the early set building stories and when people were just finding out what cards were truly rare (the Mcstaldi and 72 guys were pretty entertaining).

I believe with the prices falling for sets like 72 and 68 it has made alot of people less interested in set building. Back in 01 the registry was all the talk. Now it's all about half grades, altered cards and bogus auction houses. It seems we have come almost full circle, pre PSA in our industry.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
  • I still read the boards almost daily even though I stopped grading/collecting cards a few years ago. I pretty much only collect autograph pieces from Gretz or Dr. J now.
