I think this is my prettiest half dime (huge pics)

BarndogBarndog Posts: 20,515 ✭✭✭✭✭
this half dime is used to be in my registry set, but it is only a PCGS MS-64 (used to be an NGC MS-65, btw). Nonetheless, it is the prettiest one I have. I like the dark toning, I like the retained cud on the reverse, and I like the "workmanship" in punching the date (the so-called 3 over inverted 3 variety...half dime collectors just call this the 1834 LM-1/V-5A). Mark Goodman did the imaging...check out the closeup on the date. Spectacular coin, wonderful images.

Sweet color and is that a repunched date?

I love the closeness of the lettering in the headband. Elements of the letters in LIBERTY and the spacing between the letters stick out like isolated islands (especially around IBE). What a gorgeous coin! Congrats.

in addition to mispunching on the 3 (thus the 3 over inverted 3 designation), the 4 was repunched too.

OUTSTANDING!!!!!image The toning must be very dark because I don't see anything from a surface condition or quality of strike perspective that would keep that coin out of a 66 holder!

Although not a seated baby, that's still one heck of a coinimage

I have to agree with this...PCGS does seem to 'penalize' toning...oh well...

...I don't think anyone needs a label or some plastic (or even a sticker) to KNOW that this is one spectacular coin!!!

BTW...thanks for the wonderful giveaway...shoot me a PM and I'll give ya my mailing info...imageimage
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

Not so sure about that, it would appear that there are large gaps of broken luster which would keep it from a 65. NGC tends to add a point for eye appeal.

    regarding the comments on grade:

I appreciate the input. Bottom line is that the coin is what it is and 65, 64, 66, or even 63 would not matter to me. There are very, very few 1834 LM-1 half dimes with a retained cud, and I am thinking there are none prettier than this one. Eye appeal is what matters to me for this coin.

Very nice... I like the inverted 3. Without seeing the coin in hand, it seems pointless to agree or disagree with PCGS or NCG. Besides being an attractive coin nicely imaged, it seems that we can use this post to remind collectors that grading has a subjective component to it...

Since that POS MS-64 obviously doesn't fit into your set of gems.....
