Sounds like there is some confusion as to "upper case U" vs. "lower case U."
The "U" used in "UNITED" in 2007 DOES NOT have a serif or tail in the lower right corner. The "U" used in "UNITED" in 2008 DOES have a srif or tail in the lower right corner.
I don't know whether any given person is calling the style with the serif the "upper case U" or the "lower case U," so let's just say "Without Serif" to refer to the "Style of 2007," and "With Serif" to refer to the "Style of 2008." This way there can be no confusion.

yes, there certainly could be more with the lower case U. They were all minted, tons of them, back in 2007. edit: Weren't they?
The Mint has fiddled around with a number of things, not the least of which is this ASE lower case U situation. Who in the world ever learned to write the United States of America, beginning with a lower case letter? Some commie?!!!
Look at the fiasco on issuing the Sacs. Nobody knew wtf was going on for the longest about the 2008 Sacs being approved for mintage, edge-lettered or not, yada yada yada. What else was there? I've lost count. The ASE deal, the Sac issuance, ...?

TD, this use of the proper U began as a question (01/10/08) about it being lower case or upper case.
This particular thread began talking about font, a foot on a letter, capitalization, and ...lower case letters!
when did serifs come up? page 3?
edit: I started many of my sentences on this forum with lower case letters following 01/10/08 because of this very problem about lower case vs. upper case. I find it amusing and I love raking the Mint around about it. The ASE in 2008 looked like a big mistake to me since it had already been out a while. I could've understood the quarter's font being a design change timed with the state quarter program.

Are you referring to 2007-dated coins struck in 2007, or 2008-dated coins, with the lower case u, struck early (i.e., in 2007)? The 2007-dated coins would have had the upper case u.

CORRECTION: If you look at the 08-W image, the U does indeed have serifs. What's missing is the 'tail' on the U. So should we now call it the "tail-less U variety"?
I see your point. The 2007 reverse does have faint serifs at the tops of the letter. The 2008 reverse does not, but it does have the tail on the U. So, I guess we should say "No Tail U" and "With Tail U."

Well, they still have 8+ months to make more, so I wouldn't put too much stock in "low mintage." The reason that they suspended sales in the first place was that they had sold so many coins they ran out of planchets. That is not a scenario likely to end up in a "low mintage" in the long run.

Just wanted to say THANKS to everyone that responded to this thread. The responses here that helped sort this thing out made the folks here the first to discover that there was indeed more than one '08 reverse, days before the NGC announcement.
It's great that CU keeps this venue for sharing knowledge and making discoveries open to the collecting community.
THANKS CU

Every now and again, amidst the bad eBay listings, bad eBay sellers, whining about the US Mint and complaining about TPG's and their grades/slabs/labels, a thread pops up that has REAL value to collectors.
This was one of them! It underscored the importance of actually looking at your coins through a collectors eyes and discussing the differences observed.
It also took the SAE out of the field of "mundane"!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
<< <i>Happy New Year. Some classics are worth a "To The Top" for the new people. >>
Those were the good ol days! Thanks for the tip halfhunter! I ordered a few after the discovery and ended up with about a dozen of the 08 rev 07, several of those I still have.
