<< <i>gee, I didn't post it for the price....I posted it as a joke due to the past....Russ had purchased a quantity of silver at different times and it seemed like every time he did it would spike....
please sit down and take a deep breath...... >>
AND I CONTEND THAT A 25 CENT INCREASE ON AN $18.36 ITEM IS NOT A "SPIKE". ITS A 1% INCREASE!!!!! PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOUR DEFINITION OF "SPIKE" IS!

gecko - where have you been lately?? - the price of PM's (commodities) directly affects the coin market - if you havent noitced . . . common date gold eagles and saints are well over $1000/coin - many on this forum know a hell of a lot more than I do and I welcome info on PM's etc and how it relates to coin collecting - keep it coming!!!!

Hey Jimmy, how much more is my 1887 dime in PCGS64 worth now that silver is up 25 cents?
Honestly? Probably about 5-10% higher this year based on gold's and silver's movements in 2007. They both float all boats in the coin hobby. In higher grades, gold is probably driving select coin prices upwards 15-20% per year.

I did not think you used a multiplier on the price of the metal to measure the value of the rarity.
The price of the coin is actually set by the price that the buyer pays. Population numbers from the grading services probably influence rarity-price more than movements in metal prices.
Correct me if I am incorrect.
<< <i>I always thought that rarity was rarity and metal was metal and the two did not intermix too much.

You are correct. As a blob of silver, my 1887 dime is worth about $1.33. In a PCGS 64 slab, it is worth about $345. Therefore, a 25 cent increase in the price of silver actually increases the melt value of my coin by 2 cents. In other words, ALL of the value is in the rarity of the coin.
Roadrunner, please correct me if my belief is nuanced to the point of irrelevance.
