how about placing a Washington Quarter in the pic to give non-medal collectors a point of comparison?

Boy, if they are manhole covers, I wish our streets here in LA had them.

Very nice. I just missed a bid on the bronze oneimage
    I guess I'm to cheap.

Truthfully, I am one of the worst people to ask. There are many, many more people
much better skilled than I am.

But for my 2 cents worth.
I would tilt the camera slightly, up, down or side. I prefer up at the coin.
And cut down the light level on the camera. I shoot with a
good amount of light but I cut down the level on the camera.
And the image always looks better dressed in a black background in makes up for poor camera skillsimage
and there is nothing wrong with adjusting the image clariety with software as long as you aren't changing what the coin/ medal looks like.

I tried to download, crop and restore some of the color and bright levels, sharpened one notch.
I have no idea if it looks like it does in hand but I gave it my best shot.
I have a feeling the color may be off.

My camera is a Canon power shot SD750
I don't know about yours but I put my setting on:
    "Manual" setting then
adjust the "+- exposure" setting to what ever looks good then
adjust the "lighting" setting I think its called the white levels in other cameras
Then I have color settings which I adjust back and forth to either "Neutral" setting or "Vivid" setting
depending on the color of the coin.

I import it into my software which is Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006
its great software for the naive like me. Photoshop just takes to long and I have no patience.
    I prefer instant gratification.

    I hope this helps.
