That VG-8 that AskRaq posted looks pretty nice. Look around and find what grade level (detail-wise) you are most interested in and let us know. This date is available and with a target grade, i'm sure the people of this forum can find a nice coin in your target price and detail. Good Luck!
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!
I think that the Teaparty coin is nice for the money, and you would still have some budget money left over. AskRaq's coin has some troubling damage on the obverse.
The problem with expensive coins is that you always want to go another grade higher, hoping that it's a better investment, and because they generally look better. What grading range are the rest of the "nice" coins in your husband's collection?
I always try to get a "key" coin that approaches or exceeds the condition of it's new buddies within the collection. The reason that I like the Teaparty coin is because it has "no problems", so even if it is a lower grade, it will still blend in.
I'd rather have a "no problems" $1,500 coin than a $2,000-$3,000 coin with some distractions. But that's just me.
One last thing - I definitely agree with others that you should ONLY buy a PCGS or an NGC graded coin.

the no problems.....what exactly does that mean? to me, the coin looks like the edges have been rubbed down or some of the letter on the backside...(the jj teaparty coin) so lower grade does not necessarily mean problems? can you please clarify that for me? thanks

The amount of natural wear is what the grade reflects... lower grade is greater wear. "Problems" are issues that are other than wear... scratches, cleaning, polishing, dings, holes, etc.
The coin I linked to (on eBay) above has minor issues in the fields but less wear & great detail in my opinion. I think that the toning will make the marks in the field less noticable & you probably wouldn't really be distracted with the coin in-hand (however, they are quite noticeable when a close-up picture is viewed at multiple times the size of the coin).
i don't know how to link on here...but i just placed a bid on a coin on ebay....whew! that's scary!!!! it is a pcgs vg8 cert # 12330131estate sale it says. and i went to pcgs and verified cert. number. I bid $1650, i am winning so far. but i have 4 days to go...and we are going on vacation this weekend out of state...uhhggg. so if any of you can look at that coin, tell me what you think, and how high i should be willing to go, or keep searching....ANY INPUT IS APPRECIATED. now i have to change passwords and stuff on ebay to keep hubby off of it lol. hmmm, i have to work around this somehow. thanks again everyone!!!!
Edited to add, I like the coin for the grade, but I am far from an expert on these. I am sure you will get more feedback, I would have no idea on how much they go for.
Well guys...here's a little update! I WON THE AUCTION on the 16d Dime. I got it for a $2040..or something very close to that. It was a pcgs certified VG8...I have mailed off my money orders. The seller seems very reputable per his feedback. At this point, it really doesn't matter if I got a good deal...the coin is mine...i mean, my hubby's...or soon will be. I am waiting on it's arrival. I just hope that goes all well. I wanted to say Thank you to everyone who offered input. I visited coin shows, read magazines, blogs, newsletters, web pages etc. and by far, this website was the best!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!! I know my darling hubby will be so happy....now i better start looking for the upgraded version of this in time for his 50th b-day lol! Thanks again, A once completely lost, clueless, coin searching wife of the greatest husband in the world! (I now know a little more) Armat....aka Tamra
Well, I rec'd the dime in today! It's better looking than in the pics and I'm very happy. The only thing I was upset about was I found out from the lady working in the Post office that the seller did not include insurance. WHAT!!!! Thank God this coin made it to me safely. Also, she instructed me any coins of value should be sent registered mail, and insurance for the value of the coin. That way if the coin is lost or damaged, full value would be given....not the $15 dollars otherwise I would have rec'd. (it would have cost $100 to insure this coin for the $2k-well worth it in my opinion) Anyway, the dime is a beauty...I think my hubby will like it very much....now, to get searching for that VDB for his 50th huh? lol. Saturday is the party, and he will get his coin then....hopefully i'll have some pics to share if I can figure out how to get them on here.... thanks yall!! Tamra
Well yall, here it is finally.....Here's a pic of my darling hubby with his dime. He loved it!! Thanks again for helping me make his birthday special. I am hoping to get this pic attached properly.... well, i was trying to attach the photo, but it says photo is too large...hmmm. so unless someone can tell me how to make it less, you will just have to take my word for it. Mike did look cute as a button in his little colorul cap that stated "I don't wanna grow up" printed on it, and a propeller on top with a very big smile...you could say his whole face lit up when he saw his beloved 1916 D dime. Thank you all, Armat
I missed this thread first time around. A great story, and how nice that everything worked out. I can't imagine how thrilled and shocked your husband must have been. And kudos to the board members who helped the OP out.
And it was very kind of you to remember to come back to let everyone know how things turned out.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Try saving the photos with smaller dimensions or lower resolution - you don't need more than about 3" x 5" at 72 dpi -- and we'd love to see the propeller beanie!!!!
Me at the Springfield coin show: 60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!
who knows what my next adventure will bring....Father's Day is around the corner...but I think a homemade gift from the kids will work. Although now he's talking about some coin he had before that he wishes he had another. It was a quarter or a dollar coin from 1800 something or another.....another coin to start researching i suppose. but, thankfully, not the 16d dime lol. now he thinks his dime should have a higher grade and is talking about re submitting it. it is a beautiful dime, and the pics did not do it justice. from other coins i saw, this dime was as nice as some higher grades...but i'm not the collector nor the expert....well, maybe lol. take care all! Armat
I can say with 100% certainty that I will never receive a coin as a gift from my wife - unless of course you provide your number and are willing to give lessons!
well, maybe you too can get a coin from your wife....just mention it every single birthday, christmas, anniversary etc. etc. etc....eventually she too will get sick and tired of hearing it and may just buy it to shut you up lol...or to make you happy (or a little of both)
An interestng thread. Your original account almost sounded too good to be true and one could have justifiably been a bit skeptical about whether the 'story' was merely intended to fish out a good deal for the poster. Anyway, thanks for updating and kudos go to all of the members here who contributed their advice and expertise in assisting you with your quest.

Registered with insurance for 2K should not cost more than about $20, not sure where the $100 came from.
I can't imagine what kind of a person would mail a $2000 coin without insuring it. If you check the US postal regulations manual, I believe that mailing coins or jewelry without insurance is technically illegal (at least it was in the 1990s when I looked it up). And Registered mail would not be over $20 on that item. Real nice dime, by the way, and glad you received it.

It'll shut him up until Christmas, maybe. Now that he knows you will buy him coins as a gift, next he'll want a 1955 DDO cent, or a 1909-Svdb, or a 1922-no D. You'll never hear the end of it now!
well, i don't think he'll be getting anything like the dime....not anytime soon....and yall are all correct....there is always another coin to chase.
I am a huge Elvis fan. for years, i searched for my favorite 45. My fav Elvis song is Love Me Tender. I was bound & determined to find that 45 to add to my collection of records/Elvis collectibles. I did purchase a framed 45 reproduction that I purchased at a store near graceland. but i wanted a record from the actaul period it was out....not some souviner ya know what i mean. everytime i went to an estate sale, garage sale, pawn shop, resale shop, record shop etc....i always searched for Elvis records. then i met my darling hubby. he introduced me to EBAY!! OMG!!!!!! typed in Elvis record Love me Tender....****WHAMMMMMMM**** THERE IT WAS. The item i had been searching for. Right there in my hands...almost. Of course i bid on it and won. That was the happiest day of my life (ok, not really, but close) and the saddest. Now the thrill of the hunt is gone. I no longer look through all the record bins at the stores, and the passion for the find is gone. It's really sad. My hubby Mike wanted that dime sooooo bad. I talked to him about it. if you ever get that dime, the thrill of the hunt will be gone. You will have nothing exciting to look for again. Boy was i wrong!!! it's just another date, another mint mark, another higher grade to search for. Good news for yall who collect coins, there are lots of different variations to chose from. There is only one Elvis. but, i'll be happy to take anything of elvis off of your hands for you lol. I'm glad he still has his love of collecting coins. take care all. Armat....ya know, the one looking for the cheap coin lol.

i later found out that the coin was registered through some online insurance company or so i was told. the $100 came from the postal worker who informed me that there are different types of insurance and to have the coin replaced at it's appraised value (vs being a dime) would cost about $100. I don't know....I don't plan to purchase another 2k coin anytime soon lol. i just know to make sure i am proved proof of insurance. the postal worker about had a fit when she found out that there was no insurance (through the post office).
