Has The US Mint Ever Dropped Coin Prices During The Year Offered?

I note that the 2008 W "Burnished Die" gold coins have now been released with the new higher prices to reflect the price of gold (which has now dropped $80-90/oz) - I can not recall them ever LOWERING prices during the year offered; we know they don't mind raising them!

    I think they won't lower them because they are afraid of offending their customers who bought at higher prices. They could loose quite a few loyal customers that way. I don't recall them lowering but may have read on previous threads they did it once. Lowering would open a can of worms-like lots of returns if done in a 30-day window. JMHO.

    Yea, because any price drops I remember were from one year to the next and not the same year - I think we may be stuck with these prices! On those shows that call out what is "Hot" and what is "Not", I think all of the W gold burnished uncs are going down for a while....Whatcha think?

  • I think I recall the Mint lowering the price of the 2006 Buffaloes at one point. I also recall a recent Mint statement printed in NN that prices would be adjusted lower if the situation was called for. Notice that the Mint does not usually yank for repricing higher until the coin in question comes very close to melt value, so don't expect them to quickly lower prices, either. Who knows what the Mint considers to be too much profit on a coin?

    Not to my knowledge has the mint dropped prices during the year offered, but, the 2001 Kennedy halves in CLAD have dropped after the seventh year of sales. It's about five dollars cheaper on the 200 coin bag and I think about $3 on the rolls.

    I thought the 2006-W Buffalo was released at $800 and stayed at that until the 2007-W Buffalo was released at $825 which was later raised to $899. I don't recall them ever being less than that. The State Quarter FDCC's were $19.99 when released and were finally lowered to $14.99 last year when they started piling up due to lack of demand image

    I would think no drop in price.

    One reason is, they bought the gold 'today' and minted the coins, so they paid $900 + and ounce. Even if gold goes to $700, if they lowered their price, they would lose money.

    "regular" coins or special packages might be reduced, but not gold bullion.

    For reference:

    2008 available april 1.

    * One-Tenth Ounce Coin $ 124.95
    * One-Quarter Ounce Coin $ 295.95
    * One-Half Ounce Coin $ 565.95
    * One Ounce Coin $1,119.95
    * Four-Coin Set $2,039.95
  • I don't remember it, but the Coin World Almanac 1976 edition on page 34 says the 3 piece proof set
    price has been reduced to $12 from $15. Somewhere else I saw a reference to $3 refund checks being issued.
  • I guess if they make an item "no longer available" for 30 days they'll then be able to put it back on sale at a lower price and not have a bunch of returns come in.

    Buyer resistance to these prices??? I want to wait and see a moment as there seems for the moment no rush on getting these, with supplies aplenty from the two previous years...
