I only got a month into 8th grade before leaving school, but I can spell.
In the 1950s the teachers taught spelling and grammar.
Education has went downhill quite a bit.

Here's a riddle for ya- What's more than a lot more?

Good education went out the window with the advent of time outs, child development experts, and frivolous lawsuits.

I know of very few people who work as hard as teachers- especially in the public schools. It is a demanding and difficult job with few tangible rewards. You say you don't like time-outs, lack of discipline, social promotion, etc.? Guess what, NEITHER DO WE! The schools are a reflection of our society- if you don't like it, change it!
Do you blame the police for a rise in the crime rate? Police officers are handcuffed by the same overly protective laws, frivolous lawsuits, etc. They do their best to be effective officers DESPITE these handicaps. So do we as teachers. We didn't make the rules you don't like- we just have to follow them.

Teachers are great people for sticking in there for the future of our country. If teachers can teach a handful of kids to learn how to read and write they have done their jobs.
The problem is one simple thing. Lust!! kids shouldn't have babies, people who think they can make a kid without proper planning are as crazy as Presidents George W. Bush and his plan of NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.
How can you teach a kid when he/she comes home with homework and has a question or a project to do and there are no parents there to help them. Year after year a kid tries so hard to cope with learning and keeping up with daily learning problems finally throws in the towel when he/she knows that their dreams in life are over in the 8th year or so in school because it's time to grab what's next in life that life has to offer them.
Until our government takes education more serious, we will continue to have a huge number of people that will continue to be a burden on tax payers pockets because if we don't educate, we will spread more disease, have more crime, and lastly stuff the pockets of the wealth.
Many might disagree with my senerios on this topic and we can go round and round. But until someone making $20.000 to $50,000 a year and think they can have the best, well that is why our county is in the shape it is now in all parts of the puzzle.
Why should the government have anything to do with eductaion? Please cite one thing the government does "well"-----------------I'm waiting
