Lee . . .My parents got one of the originals in 1946. Living in Villisca, IA and they were able to get it at the Nodaway Valley National Bank. We had it rattling around in the safety deposit box with the important papers for 35 years until I took it out and put the (now AU) coin in a 2x2 when I started to get interested in coins. The main one in my commem set is a PCGS 67 bought raw, but nothing compares to the original the family got.

    Another excellent post!
Have to disagree on the design, though. To me it is one of the most cluttered, boring commemorative designs. It is exceeded in fundamental “ugly” only by the Washington-Carver, Booker T. Washington, York County, and South Carolina halves.

Thanks RWB! I agree with you on the design. That's why these are relatively cheap, even at the 67 level.
