The Girl's head in Hardee's Drive-thru nearly exploded yesterday

She was about 17, and had no idea what to do when I handed her 13 halves. First she stood there with a blank look, then carefully looked at them with a what the heck look. She then made neat stacks of 2 across the counter.. and then spent another 30 seconds looking at them all, totally lost. Good thing I didn't drop the Ike I had on her. image

  • I elicit similar responses from (generally younger) cashiers when I purchase, coffee, snacks etc and pay with presidential dollars. The cycle is very predictable: shock (blank look), puzzlement (stare at the coins in their hands) and then annoyance (scowl) or resignation (a shrug). Usually, I think that they eventually just drop the coins into the till to worry about sorting out later.
  • First time I spent a presidental dollar it took a cashier, and two managers to figure out what to do. image

  • Usually the cash drawer doesn't have a spot for anything above a quarter. You just making it hard for them. They'll spend all day moving these coins out of their way.
Building a set of EBAY "Estate" coins.
  • If mass circulation of these coins were to ever succeed, maybe some enterprising person/business could make a killing selling till drawers with extra compartments...

  • Well, the other half of the story is how I ended up with so many halves. I bank at a small bank about 45 minutes from where I live. Its a wonderfull little bank. In fact when I was there this morning, the bank president was working on saturday morning like always as a teller. Friday, After we got done at the drive thru, my wife tells me she wants to go in and get some coins to look at on the way home. She comes out carrying her purse like a football upset. Seems she got 200 dollars of halves, and put them in her purse. Two steps from the counter the strap broke.. and you can guess the rest.

it sounds like you might live in a rural community? drive 45 minutes to the bank? hope you get good mileage

At least you got service. I called a pizza place today while I was in town to place an order. After burning enough minutes on hold, I hung up. After finishing my in-town biz, I drove over to a Chinese food place to pick up some take out. I was asking the teenager about what came with different plates and the dude suddenly developed an attitude. I looked at him, sat the menu down and said, "You know... never mind," then walked out. Then I drove over to Jason's deli to get some sandwiches. There was another teen ager standing behind the to-go counter. He was talking a girl customer that eventually decided not to place an order. So I step up to the counter... I was the only other person in the take-out area... to place my order. The guy doesnt say a thing to me. He just turned and walked away. So I'm standing there at the cash register with a "I cant believe this" look on my face. No one acknowledged my existence or anything. I wait about two minutes, then set the menu down and walk out the door. So I look across the way, Whatabuger. This time, I go through the drive through.... success at last.

This is typical these days. Service? What the heck is that? None of these "empoyees" cares if the business they work for goes out of business that day. Not my fault. I only "kinda" work there. Besides, I can get a job at Fred's burger palace for a nickel more an hour across the street. Do you want a laugh next time? Ask them ANY history question. When did the War of 1812 start and then watch these IPod wizards tell you they can't answer it without Google.

Thats the kind of service, or lack there of.. that I was getting in our local chain banks. I love my bank.. First National Bank of Paxton.. Its the best service I have ever received in any bank.. and worth the drive.

  • I just wanted to add I spent some halves on my way to Disneyland this past week. The young girl at the convenience store didn't bat an eye when I handed her $3.50 in halves.

Now the lady at the Panda Express in Anaheim asked me if they were dollars. I told her they were halves but I would be happy if she accepted each one as worth a dollar. image

I had a simular experience spending halves at a Burger King a few years ago. After three times trying to get the correct chagne, I gave up. The kid was clueless on what I gave her even when I told her I gave her $2.50 in 50 cent coins for a $2.12 bill.

I had a similar experience at a convenience store when I tried to spend a $2 bill the other day.

The young fella at the counter scrutinized it very carefully and scribbled it up with one of those counterfeit detector pens before I took it back and said, "here, man, I've got two ones if you don't want that".

You never can tell with $2 bills or halves or dollar coins. Sometimes the recipient is thrilled, and says, "wow, I'm gonna buy that outta the till", and other times, they're all like, "is that REAL?", and frowning.

  • In a reversal of that story, I decided to mess with a cashier the other day. A teenaged cashier at Target handed me an old (pre 1996) type $10 in change. (and keep in mind, I'm old enough to be this kid's father). I looked at it and asked him, "are you sure this is real?". He said "oh sure, they used to make them that way." I looked it over like I wasn't sure and hestiantly said, "well, ok then".
  • My oldest is only interested in 2 dollar bills.. last time he went to the bank with me, he asked if they had any.. and the teller said.. hold on let me look, no one ever asks for those.. she came out of the vault with 5 - 1953A Two Dollar bills, that looked like they had been in the vault since back in the day.

Several years ago when I was teaching at UT-Austin, the on campus post office just started using the "new" golden dollars for change. I would buy a single stamp with a $20 note and then go to one of the campus restaurants for a soda. The young girls behind the counter would giggle with glee when I made a purchase. I later came to learn that they thought the coin's gold color was from...you guessed it...real gold.

Sad, but so very true. When I was at the ANA I wrote a grant for the National Endowment for the Humanities to develp a course for educating teachers about the role of money in history [it was like the "Coins in the Classroom" course I developed, but more intense and over 2 weeks - but I digress]. One of the studies I came across described the results of testing that was done on recent (within a year) high school graduates regarding their knowledge of history. In one sad results I do recall was when these graduates were asked about in which century (yes, which century) the Civil War was fought, greater than 60% of those questioned got it wrong...>60%! I weep for the future.

As Sumnom indicated, the dollar coins are now regularly accepted here in Seattle... I see them in the cash registers and the tellers always have a stack in their coin trays. Seems the coins have taken hold in commerce in the NorthWest... Cheers, RickO
  • Not quite off topic, I am happy to report the Self checkout at my local commissary accepts dollar coins. I find it interesting the cartoon by the slot shows a coin with 20 on it. I assume this implies twenty cent coins.

Decided to drop a few prez bucks myself this last weekend. Went in to pay for gas with 20 of them and the cashier said "what are these" I said they are the new presidential dollars. She ended up having to call the manager to figure out if she could really take them for payment.

You mean the famous portrait and important part of our nation's history that Jimma Carta decided to deface?

Take a much closer look and see how he decided to integrate it.

Yeah, old Jimma was was quite the insightful man, he was the one who told us the Ayatollah was a "Holy Man". The Shah doesn't quite look so bad now now, does he?

We have old Jimma to thank for the radical Islam movement that has blossomed into the mess we have today.

The man was a disaster as CINC, he remains an embarrassment today.

Don't confuse them too much image

I have been spending prez bucks here in Philadelphia quite a bit recently and most people just take a second to process what i handed them, but they know what it is. Or at least they see the big "$1" on it.

Interesting though...for a while in the last few months I would go buy the Sunday paper with a new Prez dollar and a half dollar. The paper was $1.50. Cashier never had a problem. One week I happen to notice the paper now says $1.75 on it. No idea how long that change had been in place, but no one ever claimed I wasn't paying enough image

  • I am making an effort to circulate the prezzies. Every time I ask for a few rolls at the bank they make me wait while they retrieve them from the vault, then when I spend a few at a time the cashiers usually ask if I've been to the post office. I still tell them 'yes' even though all our stamp machines are credit card only now, seems to save stretching their minds around the idea that I asked my bank for them. image Why would anyone do THAT?!?
