One last question before they go out? Should I request NO QUALIFIERS on the submission form? I would hate for the Aaron to come back 9 (oc) when it might pull a straight 8.

By the way, I took out the Cey, Randolph RC, and a couple of more. I added the Morgan and the Thornton.

I am filling out my submission form, and would like opinions on the "no qualifiers" question as soon as I can. Thanks.

Luzinski is a low pop in PSA 9 I believe, but that one looks like it has some snow on it?? Can you as for a no PD qualifier and will they knock it down 2 grades??

I always request no qualifiers, but maybe it's just me. Great cards!!!

I sent these off on Wednesday. I did request no qualifiers.

What is y'alls opinion of the Billy Williams and the Ted Kubiak? I just looked at the pop report and there are ZERO PSA 10's. There is also ZERO PSA 10's on Ted Kubiak.

Wow. Those are great. I came across a nice 76 set a couple of months ago, got one 10 and a bunch of 9's including Guidry. The nicest card in the set was Billy Williams, which I thought was a sure 10. Yours appears nicer. Mine pulled a 9 and I was disappointed. Yours might be the first. Best of luck.

    Outstanding, gotta love those 76s.
  • This thread is killin me! Ive been debating on whether or not to start a 76 set for awhile. Awesome find Shane.
  • Very Nice cards, but you have to wonder how the slight diamond cuts are going to affect the overall grade....

This is a good thread and those cards are nice. I do not want to jinx you, but I have a feeling that a grader of death is going to kill this sub. I hope I am wrong and you get some 10's.

I go back and forth. I have had that "feeling of doom" as well. Is there anything that you actually SEE that makes you feel that way, or are you saying that because of "Murphy's Law"?

No specific thing I see really. Just seems a lot of the cards are very nice with only one or two very minor flaws and I fear that a grader might be hard on them. Some of the 76 experts on here have said that the tilts will have no weight on the final grade so I am not sure. I really hope this thread resurfaces with your grades being very high, but you never know. Good luck.

Well, my hands are shaking right now, and it's not because I'm excited. I figured I would get them back pretty quickly because of them all being from one year (except for the 1982 Rose). I pretty much got slammed. I am pretty disappointed. I thought I was a better grader than this. I really didn't think there would be anything less than an 8.5 on the commons. I thought that a handful of the stars would get 8's, but that some would get 9's.

Yes, I figured I would get that. All being said (with the breakdown below), it wasn't too bad. I guess I just got my hopes up a little bit for a few more 10's and a few more stars getting 9's. The only star that got a 9 was the Fisk.

Here is the way it breaks down. There were -

    10 - 3

    9 - 37

    8 - 21

    7 - 8

    6 - 1

He's got $350 into the grading fees, another few hundred into the set, and he's got about $450-$550 worth of cards here (I think). If these numbers are accurate, then I would consider this to be a bust, too.

In any event, whether or not it's disappointing is determined largely by what you expected. If you tripped into a 52 Mantle that you were dead sure would be a PSA 9, and it came back a PSA 7, you'd be disappointed-- even though you still had a very nice card.

Just goes to show the graders do not know the .5 scale yet. I had a similar experience. I sent in 30 cards and no half grades. What gives???

    That was exactly my point.

All in all, those are pretty good grades. However, when you consider the grading fees, and the $175 I have in the set, I was just disappointed. I was figuring on the Schmidt getting a minimum of 9, the Yount a minimum of 9 (and it got a 6), the Munson a 9, and I was figuring on at least 5 or 6 more 10's. I guess I was wrong.

I looked up the pop report on those 10's.

    Rangers Team - pop 14

    Hooton - pop 5

    Kirby - pop 5

About a month ago, I had a 1976 Topps Dave Nelson PSA 10 (pop 2, mine was the second) to sell for $103. Any ideas on those?

I'm utterly shocked by this as well. No conspiracy theories abound here, but they don't make any money on grade bump submissions if they give you the half grades the first time.
  • bobbybakerivbobbybakeriv Posts: 2,186 ✭✭✭✭
That is entirely implausible that you received zero half grades. I don't get it either. I would be ticked off too.image

I believe you totally got nailed. Some of the cards that got 7's seem to be way undergraded. How can any of us send in cards right now if this type of quality is getting 7's. Someone mentioned about a grader of death- it could be real. Sorry to hear about this. I would be interested in buying a few of the stars if they are for sale.

I have to agree. I have a big sub waiting to go in but I am afraid to send it.
  • DavidPuddyDavidPuddy Posts: 3,484 ✭✭✭
Solid grades, but I too would question most of those 7's, and 8's. No .5's is very fishy.

    My theory,

Graders that have been grading for a long time are still not buying into the .5 system. Thus, some sub's will receive a fair amount of .5's (newer graders) and some sub's will not (older graders).

    Just my theory.

PSA 10s in this set in that population go for around $35-$50 I would say. I just got a Dent PSA 10 for $35 and I believe it is a pop 6 or 8.

I do have a question for you guys - how should I move them in order to maximize sales?

Should I sell the common PSA 9's as one lot? (a lot of 9 PSA 9's sold for $57 - that's about $6.33 each)

Should I sell them all individually with a low starting bid?

Should I sell them ALL together as a partial set?

    Any ideas?

  • I just got a 31 card submission back and had the same feeling as you, I pretty much got hammered. Many cards that six months ago would have gotten a grade higher. Then the kicker, 31 cards graded and 1 half grade. How can there be only 1 out of thirty one, I just dont get it.

Well good luck on selling them, hope you get some solid prices on ebay.

I thought your grades were ok.

As for the lack of .5's that seems to be feast or famine.

One guy gets 25% other guys gets 2% no rhyme or reason.

This deal would have been better had the stars graded a lil higher.

Sorry to hear that you are disappointed.

    Yes.

Open an EBAY store. Throw those guys on the shelves at
twice the price you would be happy with. Eventually, and
    often FAST, they wil sell.

Those cards look better than 7! But, I can't say for sure - have ya put a 10x on them?

On the cards - don't sell on ebay - but it seems sales are soft right now? If so - why not just hold onto them and wait for the economy/things to show improvement?

    Good luck if you're selling.

i just got back a 256 card order and got HAMMERED by an idiot grader, and got a total of 1 half grade. I emailed Joe Orlando about the 1 half grade and he did not bother to reply. I guess that's what you get for a $2k submission. unreal.
  • yankeeno7yankeeno7 Posts: 9,245 ✭✭✭
I also always find it interesting that keys never measure up to the average of the rest of submissions. There are a lot of cards out there that are better than what the holder says IMO.

welcome to everyone's brave new world sir.

    tighter standards for sure.

my last sub i included 2 crackouts that both received lower grades & i have seen so many 8s & 9s floating around e-bay that would NEVER likely get those same grades today.
