Greatest players never to APPEAR in a World Series....

Was thinking this would be a fun topic to develop a nine-card display around. Here would be my candidates....

C - ?
1B - ?
2B - Ryne Sandberg
3B - Alex Rodriguez
SS - Ernie Banks
OF - Billy Williams
OF - Andre Dawson
OF - Dale Murphy

Rod Carew would be my 2B/IF. You could say Joe Torre as a catcher because he never played in a WS as a player (but he split time at other positions)

Have to put Carew at 2nd because George Sisler would definitely be at 1st - 340 career avg

Behind the plate... Joe Torre had a pretty good career as a catcher, and never appeared in a WS as a player.

    Getting more old-school...

HoF catcher Rick Ferrell never played in a WS.

You could put Banks at first and Arod at short,

Torre at 3rd and Ferrell behind the plate.

The question should be the pitcher

what pitcher with the most wins never appeared in a WS?

I have no idea, just throwing it out there.

lol I just thought of it...had to be a Cub too...Jenkins

Asside from a few dead-ball era guys in the 1800s, there are two recent 300+ game winners who never saw the Series...
    Phil Niekro = 318 wins
    Gaylord Perry = 314 wins

    2B - Ryne Sandberg
    3B - Alex Rodriguez
    SS - Ernie Banks
    OF - Billy Williams
    OF - Andre Dawson
    OF - Dale Murphy

Jim Bunning would probably make the starting rotation with Perry and Niekro.

A couple of years ago, you could have said Biggio, Bagwell, Oswalt, Berkman, et al...

    But not anymore.

I know he did not play but wasn't Thomas on the white sox the year they won it all?

    That should count no?

    So to update:

    C - Torre or Ferrell
    1B - Mattingly or Carew
2B - LaJoie, Carew, or Sandberg
    3B - Alex Rodriguez
    SS - Banks
    OF - Dawson
    OF - Murphy
    OF - Billy Williams
    OF - Griffey Jr.
    P - P.Niekro
    P - Gaylord Perry
    P - Jim Bunning
    P - Fergie Jenkins

Rodriguez still has to count as a shortstop, so Banks would have to be replaced by another Cubs player, Santo

If we count Torre as having an appearance in the World Series, Victor Martinez may be close to the best choice for catcher. Griffey has to be the centerfielder and Sosa the rightfielder

Is Thomas a firstbaseman or a DH? More games at DH, but his best years were at firstbase. Either case Carew or Edgar Martinez are the easy choice for the position Thomas does not occupy

No secondbaseman is close to Sandberg; Billy Williams is definitely better than Kiner for leftfield

You HAVE to have George Sisler on this list. He's arguably the best player period never to play in a WS.

I'm surprised to not hear Yaz's name yet. Or am I wrong, did he appear in a WS?

Big Frank has a ring, but he was injured during the series and didn't see any playing time. He may have played a few games at 1st base in '05, but that's it, but I don't recall him being in the field.

<< <i>No secondbaseman is close to Sandberg; >>

Say what? I'll take Nap Lajoie and his 3242 hits, .338 average, 1599 RBIs, 380 stolen bases, and 1901 Triple Crown over Sandberg at 2B.

Mattingly/Sandberg or the great HOFer Rod Carew? image

Not even close, please dont trot out obvious pistrip Yankee bias to a legitimate question.

Mattingly is not even a HOFer but somehow you clowns can compare these two players..WOW.

Ryne Sandberg??? Ryne Sandberg??? over Rod Carew?

What would be the reasons you would pick two guys with decent careers over
