Actually I don't know very much about it. It was probably made in 1970 at the Hamburg mint to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Wapen von Hamburg, the depicted ship. I bought this one some time ago from Ron Guth.
Ahooka - The third one down is a French Naval Medical medal - I hope the lightsiders don't get upset with the posting of other country coins and medals but they are as beautiful as the US ones. Here is the reverse of that same medal
I just made a nice addition to my Roman coin collection, but I'll brag about that somewhere else, 'cause it ain't got a ship.
At the same time, I purchased another coin to celebrate Newbiecollector's 10K giveaway. That's right- I'm giving it away! Newbiecollector and I went in "halfsies" on the price. He is also giving away another prize and farthing has pitched in yet ANOTHER prize. So there's a celebration goin' on over on the Darkside; come join if you like!
We are giving away THREE ship coins, including the ones below!
This one is hard to beat for historical context, it's silver, it's well over two thousand years old, and it has a ship on it.
Not only does it have a ship on it, but it was also struck under the authority of one of the participants in a famous naval battle: the Battle of Actium, in 31 BC.
In the Battle of Actium, Mark Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian, who later assumed the title "Augustus", and became the first Roman emperor. Talk about famous historical figures on all sides!
Well after talking with another forum member, I have got some new additions to the Ships collection. He knows who he is and I hope he knows how much I love these piece's. Thanks again. OS.

I am not a coin investor of course and do not care too much about the price unless it is crazy for bullion.
I just like the ship designs I find.............. Ask Oldshep......who corrupted him into getting into ship theme coin collecting
