There are some really nasty hits on the bust and right in front of the bust. The color is uneven and doesnt really look pleasing. Theres a small rim ding around 6oclock on the obverse.

Im very aware of that, but whens the last time you ever heard the phrase "A cent for your thoughts"? My thread title was a clever play on a well known phrase that obviously went right over your head.
<< <i>I have no idea what you are using as a price guide, but I would value it at significantly less than $125. >>
"Coin Values" magazine, dated Jan 08. When I refer to "retail" prices, im quoting from a retail priceguide. When I quote wholesale prices, its from greysheet. There is a SUBSTANTIAL difference in case you were not aware.
It might be worth $100+ to a regular eBay type collector. I wouldn't have the nerve to start it at $.99. Probably looks OK in hand. This board is like showing it to an EAC'er, you better have thick skin.

I would imagine that you know very well that I am aware of the difference between the two. Similarly, I would imagine that you should be aware of, but appear to perhaps be willing to ignore, the Coin Values warning that reads in part "Cleaned, whizzed, damaged or otherwise altered coins bring less than Coin Values listings." Your coin falls under this caveat and would be worth less than the Coin Values listing regardless of wholesale or retail price quotes.

Tom, you are ABSOLUTELY correct!!!! Thats why I quoted the $125 price as a VF coin, and not as an AU coin. Go back and read the post again. Now I suppose you will come back and tell me that this AU details coin does not even net grade as a VF, right?
No, I will not tell you anything about net details. The most current Coin Values I have in front of me is from October, 2007 and it has no listing at $125 for any grade, although it does list $85 for VF20 and $90 for VF30, so I wasn't certain where you were getting that number of $125.

OOPS! Now im the a**hole. It is "coin prices" magazine, not coin values. Thats my fault Tom, I get them mixed up on occassion. Nevertheless, it does list the 1854 1/2 cent in VF at $125.
<< <i>I wouldnt call that coin AU. March 2008 coinvalues price is as follows: vg8-$75,F12-$80, VF20-$100, VF30-$110, EF40-$120, AU50-$150.
Just to clearify things. And baising prices off this mag is not real world prices. >>
Its definately AU details Adam. Look at those star centers! Its got some hits, and color issues, but its AU details FOR SURE! Now the net grade is certainley debateable!
Don't worry about where you are quoting prices from; no matter how much someone might debate the relative merits or value of a coin it really means nothing until the coin is sold.
Let's see.... a few days ago I asked if my 1853 1/2 Cent Anacs AU55 would cross at any AU PCGS grade... to which if I remember correct you said my coin was a "Dog".
Now you post a coin you want to sell that has suspicious color, rim dings, and a few of its own gashes.
Pretend that I posted your coin what would you call it?

Its a dog Richard. But im not too worried about what piece of plastic it lays in. Im rather interested in a fair market value for the piece. Your 1/2 cent is worth at least $150, but that doesnt make it any less of a dog.

Honestly I don't know the copper stuff well at all. When looking for an 1853 half cent for my collection almost all of the stuff I saw on ebay had lots of problems, far worse than what I ended up with. I finally bought mine at TT for $130 which I felt was fair for the coin. I don't know about the other years but in the 1853 half cents the coins seem either to be real problem coins or real nice MS stuff. There doesn't seem to be a lot of nice AU stuff. I don't know why that is. Best wishes.
<< <i>Are you planning on selling your entire collection??? >>
No, just my raw pieces. Most of them have minor problems, and if you look at my current ebay listings, you will see that im not afraid to call a problem coin a problem coin! Still relatively nice stuff however.

now class....what have we learned from mr. geckos buying practices?....hmmm?
If you really want to know its current value look up the ebay completed sales for 1854 half cents I believe you could expect $65-$75.
P.S. I base that price on your giving an honest description of the coin (altered surfaces)- if you want to hype it up and not mention the re-colored part you might get more, but then you run the risk of having it returned or receiving a negative.
Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my hard drive?

Decent coin, definite AU details. I'd put it on the Bay for 54 cents and just let it run. You have good pictures and will get paid exactly what it's worth...my guess would be $80ish.

For an 1854 half-cent? The PCGS price guide lists this for $70 in EF-40, and net EF-40 is probably ballpark.

I see $105 in EF40. Maybe you have some type of special "buy price" edition that I dont have. $70 is for F12.
