New Camera

Finally got a nice camera. Still working on things. But here is a first shot, before I actually read the manual and seriously figure out the lighting.

The coin is an 1884-O VAM-25 NGC 64DMPL.
The set up is a Nikon D300 with a Tokina 100mm f2.8 D Macro lens, shot with a copy stand, a crude light box, and a cable release.

I do need to work on the white balance and that odd corner on the reverse is because I rotated the image 10 degrees because I didn't square it up for the shot.

  • Nice pics considering their the first ones.

Just a little more light and you're all set.
  • Very nice John!! You captured the DMPL really well.... nice dark fields, frosty details! image

Yep, the white balance can be tricky and you might try using a matte black piece of paper or plastic for the background (if you have the white balance set to "automatic'", the black background may help).

Great job! I'm looking forward to seeing some great pics of some of the awesome VAMs you have in hiding!!

    Regards,

    Rick

    Good looking photos.

I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

    Nice pics.

A little fuzzy at the top of the first one. The coin and camera aren't quite level with each other. sometimes it's just the coin is tilted in the the slab. I just prop them up with a nickel or penny on the side that is low.

Jealous of the d300, I have camera control pro so I dont have to worry about a cable release and really like it for the nikon. Do others have program to take the picture and see it immediately? Nice shots I am sure it takes some adjusting.

  • Is this closer to how the coin looks in hand?

Yes. A little gamma and color adjustment?

    Looks promising.

You can also try increasing your F-stops and then focus on the lowest point.

Mark's suggestion is probably easier with the penny or nickel.
  • Yes, I corrected the color to match the NGC Holder as a white background. I thought this might be pretty close.

You do notice a lot nore of the tics and nicks in these photos than in hand though. A nice eBay pickup nonetheless (the coin, not the camera).

Actually, the coin is a 63DMPL. Hit the wrong key in the OP.
