1820 Large Cent / Randall Hoard..........."-)

Looking for opinions on this Large Cent and Grade if you please...

The thing on the cheek kind of bothers a bit, looks to be in the coin...

Some type of inclusion in the metal...?

Nice looking coin, but I agree the color looks off, maybe it's the photo.

This coin is is the N-13 variety, is readily available in all grades and it's not expensive. I'd get one that's problem free and pass on this one.
The color is not right, especially on the reverse; it's probably how how the coin was imaged.

looks better than au58 to me, although I'm useless when it comes to copper.

  • Seeing how it is not slabbed, if the black thing on the cheek is in the coin, not much can or should be done. You will only cause more problems to this Randall Hoard cent.

If it's on top of the surface, use a pointed tooth pick or a plastic spoon end to try and remove it. Be careful not to rub anything on the surface around the spot.

If you don't own it, return it unless it's at a price you can live with.

how is the luster? my first blush was 58.

  • Thanks Guys...image

The color is a little more brown in hand but the photo is real close...

I think the cheek thing is in the coin so it's part of it's history...

I like the over all apperance and love the die breaks...

    PS... I would give it a 58BN..."-)

Newcomb 13 (N13). The coin shows some circulation
wear and dings. The fading bust line seems to indicate
a late die strike. Better coins of this variety can be found.
$150/$200 bucks max for this coin IMO.

My first Large Cent was a Randall Hoard cent, and it had been harshly cleaned, but I enjoyed the detail. For a coin that going on 200 years, it ain't bad. But, like others have stated, there are better ones out there for reasonable prices.

The spot does look like an impurity in the alloy, and the color could grow on me, although it doesn't necessarily look like original color. Depending on the price, I could go either way on this one, depending on the objectives of my collection. It's not a dog.

Brother, whenever I look at a coin I try to remember what is the first thing that drew my attention. That "thing" on her chin reminds me of a boil. If you had a boil on your chin would you want to keep it?

I agree I should wait for a better example and will turn the deal around...

This is my second real copper, I'm keeping my first no matter what you all say..."-)

Here it is, please let me know your thoughts and Thanks again for the in-put...

The spot on the cheek does look like an inclusion, but the overall color of the coin is wrong.

The 1818 is obviously has original surfaces and the 1820 does not when you compare the 2 side-by-side.

That was my first thought. Looks to be struck into the coin's surface.

I agree, I would look for a better 1820 example.

1818 Newcomb 10 (N10). The most abundant Large Cent
variety known in MS. At least one keg or perhaps two came
from the Randall hoard at 15,000 per keg of which
many were bright red with random spots. Back in the
50s they were selling for $2 or $3 bucks each.

Randall horde cents are splotchy and very seldom brown like this. The coin is possibly original if not from the horde but it is the correct variety so I would guess recolored. Your 1818 looks right. --Jerry

I'm not an expert when it comes to large cents, but I believe my 1820 is from the same dies. The obverse die cracks match those on DenverDave's coin. It was described as a Randall Hoard coin when I bought it.

The color does not look correct and makes me think something was done to the surfaces.

The slabbed coin is a typical of those from the
Randall hoard-- random shades of brown with
keg marks and scuffs. Both 1818 coins shown were
struck from the same die pairs.
