Toning pattern?

  Almost looks burned...

  I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.
  Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.

  I dont know the series or patterns that well. But, I for some reason, Like these coins...

  I like them too! They seem to have been kept in some sort of hexagonal holder (paper or cardboard?)
  to produce that pattern while keeping the centers virtually untoned.

  My guess would be that these were put in whatever toned them well after the date of issue because of the apparent hairlines thoughout and the fact that most of each coin's surfaces look to have no toning or oxidation at all. In other words, they look hairlined and dipped to me and then put into whatever toned them.

  Agree with TomB, dip and retone, except I'm not sure they were put into anything to retone.

  Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

  That is the classic Amon Carter toning pattern loved by many dollar specialists. The coins were stored in custom made [sulfur impregnated] holders for decades.

  I would say some kind of square cardboard storage box might have caused that toning

  I have some AU seated quarters from this same year range and they have blue toning also. I would assume the planchets were of the same metal composition and thus prone to this type of toning.

  If the photo's were taken properly they would probably have wild color like TDN's dollars shown above.
