Do you think there will soon be a big influx of fake coins?

With China sponsoring the Olympics, thousands of American tourists will be visiting China and sightseeing will be part of the venue. I get the feeling many of these tourists will be bringing back US silver dollars among other coins and virtually all will be fake. Are my concerns unfounded? This can't be good for the hobby.

  • How on earth could someone pass up an 1872 Trade Dollar??? Seriously, unless there is an influx of collectors going, there will be a big influx. This ha crossed my mind a few times, so thanx for bringing it out to the public. Cant wait to hear others responses.
  • Though, the Chinese govt had, is it a 5+ oz gold coin commemorating the Olympics?

What if they come back with fake coins in fake top TPG holders and start entering those into registry sets? image

Olympics or not, fake coins are an increasing problem. I believe the issue has already scared some collectors from the market, and I don't know how this trend can be reversed.

I include doctored coins with the fakes.

I'm not talking about the experts, who can still apparently still determine fakes from small details, but this is a major concern for collectors like myself.

As we've seen on this board, fake certifications are also a major concern.

Maybe the Chinese government could simply issue a complete type set of 18th and 19th Century U.S. coins with every Olympic ticket.......

Americans will be going there for Chinese food , not U.S. Coins.

To late. I've already seen faked coins in fake slabs. Not just Morgans or other large denominations but Mercury Dimes, Lincoln Cents, etc. So why not counterfeit the slabs as well as the coin. Remember if the coin is in a slab it is more difficult to tell if the coin is fake by weight. I like my faked 1943 Copper Lincoln Cent in a fake plastic slab. To bad it flys to a magnet.

I would not expect that to be the case, the ability to pay for an expensive trip and numismatic intelligence would not seem
to be related in any way. image

There are already thousands of Western tourists in China (and all over the world, for that matter) buying fake coins and/or antiques and bringing them back home. There may be a little blip but I don't think it will be a big deal.

I don't think the coins are a huge problem to the hobby, but ACCESS to these are a problem. China has been churning out fake coins and currency far longer than the US has even been a formal country! This is not a new thing, they were faking British and their own Chinese coins for centuries. What has changed now is the access to these coins by the unknowing. This is not to say that China is not a boon for coin collectors, quite the opposite is true. I've been to a coin show over there that made our large shows look tiny by comparison; and there were police and show organizers patrolling to ensure that fakes weren't being sold. Are there going to be some fake coins purchased by unknowing Americans? Of course, but they will quickly find out what they have when it comes time to sell
