  Acetone wont do much. Toning is hard to remove.

  I've always wondered what causes Buffalos to tone a golden color. I see it quite often in buffalos.

  Last year I opened quite a few 04, and 05 mint 2-roll boxes of nickels to make room in my safe. Just about every one of the end coins from Philadelphia had a golden tone to them, and none of the Denver rolls had it. I thought it was odd.

  I agree why clean them? If its album toning and your not a fan, sell them and get some nice white ones.

  Remember that "nickels" are made of an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel. The golden toning (and the spots, too) come from the copper composition.

  Unless it is severely unattractive I would leave them alone. You would have to use something that would strip a thin layer off of the original coin and that ruins the look of any luster is removed.

  You might want to remove them from the source that may be causing them to tone.
